When Lisa Najeeb Halaby was 26, her father introduced her to King Hussein of Jordan. Within a year, she became his fourth wife. Born in 1951 to a distinguished Arab-American family, Lisa was unsure what her role would be. King Hussein was not only the head of state in Jordan but also considered the spiritual leader of all Muslims. This memoir provides a vital perspective on 30 years of turbulent world history from the Arab point of view: the displacement of over one million Palestinians by the creation of Israel, Hussein's frustrating efforts for peace, and the impact of Saddam Hussein and the Gulf War on Jordan and the royal family. A fascinating and dramatic portrait of a woman who took a great risk in a part of the world where women's roles are narrowly defined.©2003 Her Majesty Queen Noor (P)2003 BBC Audiobooks America Entertainment & Celebrities Historical Middle East Politics & Activism Royalty Women

Fascinating and illucidating. Well read. Shame it jumped back and repeated short sections a few times.

Enlightening

Sometimes my mind wanders when I listen to some audiobooks, but I was riveted from start to finish with this book.

It was a history of the conflicts in the Middle East and a personal family history at the same time. The two histories intimately connected through out the story of the ‘Orrible little Monarch’ as he was called by his Sergeant Major at Sandhurst. It is as close to being a part of the family as can be, but I’m very conscious that it is just one view of that family. The plotting and scheming between Prince Hamza and King Abdullah is an example how family intrigues can seep into public life and visa versa.

I spent about six weeks in Jordan two years ago. Most people I met were almost angelic with their hospitality and love for the King. I understand a little bit more why that is the case..

A Short recent history of the Middle East

This book captures the live Queen Noor has for King Hussein which is lasting energy after his death. He was pivotal to do much in the Middle East and hearing what life was like for the family gives so much more understanding to his commitment.

Wonderful insight in to the life of a King

Very well delivered overview of her life and the political situation in Jordan.
Maybe too lovey lovey at times as if her transition between cultures was seamless and caused no inner difficulties

Very interesting
