Growing up in my teens and early 20s are used to wait anticipated the next book of David when I found out he died I was truly upset his books taught me how to love books

I didn't know him but I miss him and have always tried to find writer to replace him which is impossible

I first read this book back in the ‘80s when I was at University. The Audiobook version has been like listening to an old friend retelling an old favourite. Gemmell’s characters are real, and you find yourself fully immersed within minutes. The narration is excellent, conveying content and emotion, and perfectly suited to the tale.

David Gemmell is to my mind one of the greatest fantasy authors of his time.

I have been waiting for this book to come to audio book for many years and Sean Barrett does not disappoint as author.

There is a combination of hope, loss, joy and genuine spine tingling power that makes the story absorbing

This works as an audio book as well as it read in the printed vesion. I last read the book around 1985, so approached this version expecting the simple story to have failed to live up to my memory of it. However the themes of honour, pride and love never go out of fashion and the basic conceit of the ultimate fort under seige by the ultimate invading force is as exciting now as it was to my teenage self. Recommended on many levels.

Loved this series when I first read it. Glad to see it on Audible.

The tone of the narrator is spot on for the tone of the book. (minor spoilers) The way the grief of one character was conveyed after the death of a loved one gave me chills (a and maybe a few tears)
