About this listen

A thousand years ago a people’s blood was shed on this parched earth. Now the dying has begun again.

High on a desert ridge, The Watcher awaits....

The body in the arroyo belonged to a man who’d made his living plundering ancient Indian sites. And the only witness to the crime would not change his story: a demon had killed his friend.

Sheriff Cliff Lansing has an unexplained death on his hands, and it’s only the beginning. In Las Palmas, New Mexico, a US senator is on his way to meet a Zuni shaman who is holding up a land swap involving 150,000 acres in New Mexico and Arizona. Backed by a powerful businessman, the senator intends to push the deal through. But in a long, dark night on the high desert, he is led into a storm of violence and shame.

Now Sheriff Lansing is headed out to the Anasazi Strip, where the truth awaits him—in the swirling dust of magic, greed, and murder.

A cracking good story and well read.
If you're missing Longmire then this is a good substitute along similar but not too similar, lines.

It's not Longmire good but it is good.

This is a good story, well written, well read, good character development. I will read the series.

And an extremely well written and exceptionally well read story. Surprisingly substantial listen, which I assumed would be a bit of lightweight trivia to fill a Saturday afternoon. There's a magic inherent in the phrase 'the high desert', and M. S. Hackler manages to capture this magic on every 'page ' of "Legend of the Dead". In crisp, spare prose, without resorting to great swathes of description, he brings the South western desert, and the people - both ancient and contemporary - who inhabit it alive so you can almost smell the desert air ! Wonderful... The characters are very well rounded and believable too, and I'm looking forward to spending more time with, and credits on, sheriff Cliff Lansing.

Fascinating subject...

This is well narrated though the story is fairly pedestrian. Fine for in the background while you decorate a room 🙂
