Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets, we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime", and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever got through. I would recommend to anyone. It may seem arduous at times but it’s worth it.

An incredible & immense story

It is known as the big book and it does go on and on! Fortunately the story is excellent and the characters are so well thought out and described.

There is a lot of tangents that Hugo goes very deep into (Battle of Waterloo, church history etc.) I found there to be more detail in these that needed, but they were at least interesting.

Glad I listened to it and I will enjoy the musical even more the next time!

Definitely a BIG book

A towering piece of literature and an equally towering performance from the reader, Bill Homewood.

To listen to Les Mis is quite a labour, but it is worth the effort. The translation could do with a bit of updating, in that it sometimes was too literal to the French text. That said, to listen to this work being read so well is a very good substitute to reading the original. But it is 60 hours long…

A Towering Work and a Towering Performance

This excellently crafted story is a literary masterpiece. The reader is held captivated by it'scomplexities andthe vivid descriptionof humanity.
The performance of the reader is very good and compliments Hugo's genius perfectly.
