About this listen

A standalone angsty second-chance married couple romance set in the Reflections universe from best-selling author, A.L. Woods.

Dougie

Rich girl, poor boy.
It was the oldest story.
Yet it was ours.
I knew Penelope was different the moment I laid eyes on her.
But all she wanted was to be friends-with-benefits.
My best friend told me not to mess around with the new girl.
He didn’t say anything about marrying her.
Or what might happen if we broke our vows.

Penelope

I was the rebellious trust fund baby.
The one who threw the finger to her parents.
I designed a life I loved.
No rules, no expectations.
Something easy.
Dougie didn’t want easy, he wanted commitment.
Babies, marriage, the postcard perfect house in the ‘burbs.
The life. It was all ours.
Until it wasn’t.
All we had now were lies and betrayal.
Lies that might just cost us everything.

You know that feeling when a book just hurts so good? That’s what Lies delivers.

This isn't a simple romance; it's a raw, emotional deep-dive into a marriage shattered by secrets and silence. Dougie and Penelope's second-chance journey is angsty, honest, and utterly captivating. You will feel their pain, regret, and enduring love as they fight through their history. It’s the kind of complex, character-driven story that keeps you holding your breath.

The audiobook is absolute perfection. Lilly Drake (as Penelope) captures her quiet strength and deep vulnerability flawlessly. Logan Anare (as Dougie) is phenomenal, giving voice to his rugged exterior and his painful, internal struggle. Their performances intensify every moment of angst and passion.

If you love a honest, second-chance romance where the stakes are high and the emotion is raw, this is a must-listen.

One of my best listening for 2025

I went into this one blind (new-to-me author) and wow, Woods did not hold back. First and foremost: major trigger warning for miscarriage. The imagery is powerful and can be extremely difficult if that’s a sensitive topic for you. Please take care with this one. Woods’ writing style completely hooked me. She weaves past and present together through multiple POVs so seamlessly that you feel the characters’ turmoil right in your chest. These two are complex, flawed, hurting, and the way their story unfolds is pure angst stacked on angst. This is one of those “message” romances for me. Their relationship starts entirely physical, even though one of them quietly wanted more from the beginning. Then (oops!), they get pregnant. Then comes a rushed marriage, but the foundation of communication they needed was never truly built. It's a pattern we see in real life far too often.

This book asks a tough question: Can a marriage that started without a solid foundation survive the cracks? The answer? Yes… but it’s hell. And that’s exactly what Dougie and Penelope walk through. It’s raw, emotional, messy, and so painfully realistic at times. But it’s also hopeful. The narrators were incredible and truly breathed life into these characters. They have so much depth, so much emotion. If you want a deep, realistic, second-chance love story that gives you all the feels, I definitely recommend this one.

What. A. Roller. Coaster.

Format: Audiobook - Dual narration by Lilly Drake, Logan Anare
Series / Standalone: Interconnected Standalone (Part of Truth and Lies)
Tropes: Accidental Pregnancy, Marriage in Trouble, Rich Girl/Poor Boy, OWD

Marriage in trouble is my least favorite trope but I did enjoy this one. It was a bit longer than it needed to be but I was listening to the audio also it was easier to get through the slower parts. The dual timeline added such an angsty feel that in my romances and this one was nicely timed. The characters were not so likable in the beginning, but as the story unfolds, their attitudes toward each other start making sense and they are redeemed slowly but surely. I went back and forth several times placing blame in my head which, if that was intended, it was well done.

The smallest nuances from both narrators enhanced the proper emotions to their performances. The consistent variations in tones and accents when jumping between characters was expertly handled. I can honestly say the audio kept me engaged during the slower / repetitive parts of this book.

As usual I didn't read a summary, I just flowed with the book, as soon as I found out the audio was out I had to try it especially since this book was on my TBR.

What I didn't expect was that this book would sweep me away to such a degree that I was captivated by it for 3 days.
I couldn't stop, I kept listening at work, on the roads, while cleaning for Passover.

An unusual, special, immersive, realistic book that crushes and reconnects.
This is the story of Douglas and Penelope - but it is also the story of many couples around the world.

The story is divided into two : 3 years ago and present time.
Douglas has his eye on the new employee, Penelope, his boss Shawn warns him not to mix business with pleasure, but Douglas has another plan - Penelope will be his wife 💍
But as soon as you jump 3 years forward, all the love, excitement, affection is drained away and remains empty - Douglas walks around the house like a ghost, an emotional, despairing void.
And Penelope is bitter, angry, disturbed and broken.
What happened? How could it be that in 3 years the house they built together crumbles?

This book was a couple journey but I felt like I was with them all the way, Dougie and Penny crushed me.
They went through so much, together and separately, I saw how everything affects like a butterfly effect that brought them to the situation they live in today.

It took me a few days to digest and think about this book, which has become one of my favorites and which I won't get out of my head anytime soon.
And what I loved about it was the imperfection, the realism, so many emotions were squeezed out of me.

If you are looking for an unusual book, very realistic, painful but guaranteed to make your heart whole again - then please give this book a chance.
This book left a mark on my heart like few have - Amanda, thank you so much for this book, I also enjoyed talking to you about it in private, you are such a talented woman and I admire you for writing such a unique and yet so familiar book.
Can't wait to read more of your books, you left me wanting more❤️
