Summary

Part human comedy and part mystery, Lies the Mushroom Pickers Told is an enthralling, masterful story about what holds a village together and what keeps people apart. When journalist Patrick Bracken returns to Gohen, the Irish village where he was born, he knows the eyes of the townspeople are on him. He has come home to investigate two deaths that happened decades earlier when he was a child, deaths that were ruled accidental. But Patrick knows - and believes the whole town knows - they were murders. He knows because he and his best friend Mikey Lamb were witnesses.

And so Patrick goes to see 80-year-old Sam Howard, the lawyer who conducted the inquest into the death of missionary priest Jarlath Coughlin. As he questions Sam and Sam's vibrant, loving, gossipy wife Elsie, he seeks acknowledgment of a cover-up and an explanation of why the Protestant establishment would help conceal a crime among Catholics. During their give-and-take - about this and the nearly simultaneous shotgun death of Lawrence Gorman (aka Doul Yank) - what emerges from their collective memories are a pungent, wry portrait of village life in Ireland and a tangle of human relationships, some twisted and some that show our better side.

A good story, well narrated. I thoroughly enjoyed this listen! I knew little about the book, but it was recommended to me. The book title is a bit strange but makes total sense once you have read/listened to the story! The book is filled with interesting, well put together characters and it gives you a real glimpse into a small rural Irish community in the early 1950's (quite an eye-opener at times, and makes you appreciate the home comforts we have now!). I liked the pace and the way the story around the deaths was gradually revealed. I'm definitely passing the recommendation on.

A surprise delight!

I think a lot of it kind of became a warm, soothing background listen : I got lost in all the names and places, and some of the conversations seemed to go nowhere and just be there for the sake of being there, however it was a totally immersive listen and I really w hours rolling along through it, becoming part of this world. If you want drama and hard boiled dialogue this probably is not for you, but if you like to get lost in a bitter sweet world which doesn’t shy away from harsh reality and human weakness, then settle in for a treat.

It’s a really enjoyable read

A narrator who softly allows the story to unfold, easy listening. Audible at its best.

A Good Yarn

I chose this book as a very random choice. Best read in ages, hilarious! The ways the Irish have of putting things is displayed beautifully in this book and I laughed so much.
