About this listen

Nations are built on faith. Wars are fought on lies.

A President chosen in secret. A soldier fighting an unwinnable war. A cartel fixer caught between survival and loyalty. A journalist who cannot escape the story.

What if the United States had never conquered the West? What if Deseret, a Mormon republic born in 1851, survived into the twenty-first century as a nation of faith, secrecy, and steel?

In this explosive sequel to The Last Republic, the fragile balance between the United States and the Republic of Deseret collapses into open conflict. Armies clash across deserts and mountains, politicians gamble with destiny, and ordinary men and women are forced to decide whether truth is worth dying for.

In this novel we see the full fury of war, when the United States and Deseret meet in battle. Ryan's wide ranging experience serves him well as a writer, helping to create a cast of compelling and relatable characters.

The Audio performance is excellent, with some cameos that really help with the world building.

Highly recommended and I wait the concluding novel eagerly!

Sorry Ryan, but the choice of narrator for this book is not good. I find myself constantly re-narrating lines from the book in my head and it's tiring and keeping me out of the story. The narrator's tones are mostly flat. Emphasis is either missing or on the wrong words. It's very poor. I enjoyed the first story and I may buy this book instead of an audible 'marines' version. I won't buy any more books where Garan Patrick is narrating.

I give up.
