About this listen

Deadwood, late 1876. A rowdy and reckless undertaker’s delight. What better place for a killer to blend in?

Enter undertaker Clementine Johanssen, tall and deadly with a hot temper and short fuse, hired to clean up Deadwood’s dead...and the “other” problem. She’s hell-bent on poking, sticking, or stabbing anyone who steps out of line.

But when a couple Santa Fe sidewinders ride into town searching for their missing uncle, they land neck deep in lethal gunplay, nasty cutthroats, and endless stinkin’ snow. Their search leads them to throw in with Clementine to hunt for a common enemy.

What they find chills them all to the bone and sends them on an adventure they’ll never forget.

From the best-selling, multiple award-winning, humorous Deadwood Mystery series comes a new herd of tales set in the same Deadwood stomping grounds, only back in the days when the Old West town was young.

This story was well thought out, entertaining, and well narrated. Without giving to much away, the mix of old world Lore and the American wild, wild west was engaging with a helping of well placed humor.
Can wait to gear the next book.

I thought there was a lot to like in this story - an engaging mystery plot, unnatural entities, entertaining major characters, some interesting minor characters, a reasonable sketch of a lawless "wild west" territory, and drama. Jason Culp gave a good performance as narrator.
The ending was reminiscent of an episode of a TV drama series with a mostly-self-contained story, but teasing you into the next episode. And that's already on my phone to be listened to soon!

Only naming the mysterious "benefactor" at the end of the story seemed a bit odd, along with a vague hint about him not being entirely ordinary. I thought a few scenes and incidents weren't necessary, as they didn't obviously advance the story nor reveal much about the characters involved. Some of the fast-moving action was described in a detailed way which effectively played them out in "slow motion".

Entertaining start to a series
