Summary

Dawn O’Porter has been thinking a lot about life.
Mostly from a cupboard (and she’s definitely not hiding from her children).

Fearless, funny and unflinchingly real, Life in Pieces is a diary of a time we’ll all remember forever – laughing through the tears, finding comfort in the chaos and (in Dawn’s case, at least) discovering the life-changing properties of a midday margarita.

So if you need a shake-up in your life, here’s the tonic – with a perfect splash of tequila…

‘What should you expect? Tears, belly laughs and to come out the other side wanting Dawn O’Porter to be your best friend’ Marie Claire

‘I've rattled through it . . . Dawn O'Porter redresses the balance by telling it as it really has been: fighting a losing battle against a tide of mess, noise and need, and holding out for 5pm to crack open the tequila’ Mark Watson

Critic reviews

‘Moving and funny. I absolutely loved it’ Claudia Winkleman

‘An intimate, honest account of the first three months of isolation . . . Her book is a paean to what is truly important’ Telegraph

‘It is very funny but also intimate and honest’ Louis Theroux

‘Poignant and funny’ Red

‘I've rattled through it . . . There's been a lot of well-meaning but mad advice on how to contend with the strangest period of human history any of us has ever lived through. Dawn O'Porter redresses the balance by telling it as it really has been, for many of us: holding out for 5pm to crack open the tequila’ Mark Watson

‘Funny and heart-rending in equal measure’ Sunday Express

I’m a huge fan of Dawn’s novels so was surprised that the first few chapters set my teeth on edge. It initially appeared to be a view of lockdown from a very gilded cage, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons between Dawn’s pretty glitzy LA experience, and the experience of us mere common folk. Key workers, people on the bread line, people desperately trying to save their companies and the jobs of their employees, lonely people, homeless people, people facing illness, and of course those who have lost loved ones to Covid, will undoubtably have had a far grittier time than Dawn. HOWEVER!... I think that may have been unfair, all of our lives have been turned upside down this year after all, and she writes honestly about the emotional impact of this. She writes eloquently and movingly about the grief of losing her dear friend Caroline, and also about the huge race issues that have rightly been brought to the forefront of consciousness in recent months. The book is full of warmth, humour, and tales of family trials and tribulations. She occasionally teeters on the edge of eye roll territory, banging on about nutrition and peloton workouts, but drinks enough booze and eats enough cheese to remain relatable!

Wobbly start, but thumbs up over all!

I've read/listened to all of Dawns books, to her podcasts. watched her on the TV back in the day m, follow her on Patreon (this us a must if you are a fan) and she NEVER EVER let's us down. She is a bloody genius!
In the crazy year that is 2020 Dawn tells us exactly how it is for EVERYONE in her usual funny and direct way. Huge respect to her about speaking of the tragic loss of her dearest friend Caroline Flack 💔 but how could she not as that was the start of shitty things that shocked us all this year.
Dawn has helped me with the loss of my Dad by just talking about she feels. She completely encompasses how we are ALL feeling about 2020 talking to us as though she is a good friend (and not the super cool celeb living in LA). Love You Dawn ❤
