About this listen

Drawing on a lifetime of sniffing petrol fumes, Lights Out, Full Throttle stands large over the landscape of Formula One and takes the temperature of the good, the bad and the ugly of the petrolhead’s paradise.

Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill between them competed in 261 Grands Prix, amassing twenty-five wins, forty-nine podium finishes, one World Championship, 458 championship points, a Le Mans win, two smashed ankles, a broken arm, wrist and leg, sixty broken ribs, and two bruised egos.

Having retired from racing, Johnny and Damon have become the one constant for passionate English F1 fans in a rapidly changing landscape. They have earned cult status as commentators and pundits, with viewers loving their unerring dedication to the sport’s greatness.

It offers F1 fans a tour of the sport – from Monaco to Silverstone; Johnny’s crowd surfing and Bernie’s burger bar; the genius of Adrian Newey and Colin Chapman; why Lewis Hamilton will never, ever move to Ferrari (probably); getting the yips; money; safety; what it’s like to have an out-of-body experience while driving a car in the pouring rain at 200 mph; and the future of the sport in the wake of Covid-19 and Black Lives Matter.

Whether you’re a fan of Nigel, Niki, Kimi or Britney, pine for the glory days of Brabham, Williams, Jim Clark and Fangio, or believe that Lewis is one year away from retiring as the GOAT, Lights Out, Full Throttle is the oily rag for the petrolhead fan to inhale while waiting for the racers to line up on the grid.

A very well written & narrated insight into the Global Circus that is Formula 1. No stone is left unturned, covering all aspects of the sport, from its historical beginnings to the present day and everything from the people and machines that have moulded the sport into the multi-million dollar business that it is today.

Damon & Johnny are a perfect double act & have produced a brilliant audio book, not just by their shared experiences as ex F1 drivers, but by the way they have covered each chapter recounting their shared and individual experiences along the way. Narrated in a light hearted and very amusing way, their opinions frequently differ which leads to a good deal of friendly banter. What really comes across is a great deal of love and respect they have for the sport generally and the vast array of people & professions past and present who have influenced the sport over the last 70 odd years. Not least is the respect & friendship they have for each other; amusing, heartwarming & touching.

Altogether a great listen from 2 of my F1 heroes. I can recommend this audio book to anyone with an interest in the magical word of F1, young or old. Thanks for a great book guys & the re-kindling of some of my own F1 memories over the years!

Excellent!

This is one of those books that probably works better as an audiobook than a regular book. Damon and Johnny take a leisurely and relaxed stroll through a bunch of Formula One topics telling stories and giving their views. As an audiobook you feel like you are listening in on a chat between two mates, both of whom happen to be ex-grand Prix drivers. If F1 is your thing, you'll find plenty to enjoy here.

Enjoyable chat between two ex-F1 drivers

This was clearly well conceived during lockdown and Damon and Johnny have amazing tales to tell. Sadly, they have recorded a conversation, then read it out, in a staccato, semi informal but clearly scripted way which is a real let down. Let the chaps talk and would be 5 star all the way!

Lovely tales.. let down by terrible storytelling

Excellent dive into the world of F1. I was first a bit apprehensive of the "stiffness" of the reading of a book apparently written in dialogue format, but then I grew out of it. Damon and Johnny were excellent here, both in presentation and in creating the content. I'd love to hear more from them.

Funny and informative
