About this listen

For millennia, Stoicism has been the ancient philosophy that attracts those who seek greatness, from athletes to politicians and everyone in between. And no wonder: its embrace of self-mastery, virtue and indifference to that which we cannot control has much to offer those grappling with today's chaotic world. But who were the Stoics?

In this book, Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman offer a fresh approach to understanding Stoicism through the lives of the people who practised it. Through short biographies of all the famous and lesser-known Stoics, this book will show what it means to live stoically and reveal the lessons to be learned from their struggles and successes. The result is a treasure trove of insights for anyone in search of living a good life.

I really like this authors work but his voice is so monotonous and flat I struggled to listen to the whole book despite my interest in the subject.

Fascinating History but....

Really inspirational book,
you'll get a good grasp of the lives of stoics, and how they influenced philosophy, the world and each other.
Very simple but good concept of a book, the lifes of stoics is basically the only thing what'll read about, but there's loads to tell!
Ryan isnt scared to critique some stoics either. very insightful.

Sadly Ryan's narration is too quick sometimes and not well-paced, which is unfortunate since there is soo much wisdom in this book. You wanna have it slow down at certain points to absorb and reflect certain words.

great collection of life lessons

Ryan is a great Stoic writer. Sadly, the performance is dull and often spoken in monotone. However, it's still 100% worth getting.

Great book. Badly read.

Really believe that Ryan is a fantastic author but his narration of this book is awful. He’s got better and I have listened to other book (obstacle is the way) by him but this one is just dreadful. See other similar reviews.

I had to give up.

Great author but an awful narration

This great book introduces us to many Stoics, who we may not have known about, and whose influence shaped the thinking of the famous ones we often quote
