Summary

I’ve spent years hoping someone would finally hear me. It’s easier not to try anymore....

10 years after leaving his small Minnesota hometown in his rear view mirror for what Nolan Grainger was sure would be the last time, life has decided to throw the talented musician a curveball and send him back to the town he lived in but was never really home.

At 28, Nolan has traveled the world as a successful concert violinist with some of the best symphonies in the country. But success breeds envy, and when Nolan’s benefactor and lover decides Nolan has flown high enough, he cruelly clips Nolan’s wings. The betrayal and ensuing scandal leaves the violinist’s career in shambles and with barely enough money to start fresh somewhere beyond his vindictive ex’s powerful reach. But just as he’s ready to get his life back on track, Nolan gets the call he’s been dreading.

After a stroke leaves his father a partial invalid, duty-bound Nolan returns to Pelican Bay and a life he’s spent years trying to forget. When he’s forced to use the last of his own money to keep from losing the family home, desperation has him turning to the one man he’d hoped never to see again....

Even if I could speak, there wouldn’t be anyone there to listen....

Great story line, love the way the animals are integrated with the story. Hate what happened to one of them but story well written

Really enjoyed this

it's definitely a book which you can easily listen too. some topics are upsetting...the animal cruelty isn't pleasant to hear but somehow helps you to understand the characters a bit more.

really nice

I loved this story very much and listening to it makes it even better. Dallas is the son of an evangelist farther and an alcoholic mother. When leaving a party one day their car tumbles of a bluff which kills his mother, leaves his father in a wheelchair and Dallas losing his voice. The worst part is that his father lets everyone believe that it was Dallas who was driving to keep his mother's secret. Even his brother believes it. When his father dies he leaves the house and with his inheritance he is trying to build a sanctuary and rescue center for animals. He lives alone with his animals and is looked upon with disdaine by the people of Pelican Bay. Nolan hasn't had it easy either. Growing up he was the school freak, but his love for the violin made him well respected throughout the world. But when he starts to realise his partner is cheating on him and wants to leave him he suddenly finds himself accused of stealing a Stratovarius violin and all his savings gone. When his mother calls him home to help with his sick father he goes back to Pelican Bay only as long to help them get back on their feet. What he doesn't encounter is finding love with the only one he used to have a crush on. Sloane has a wonderful way of telling a story full of emotions and Michael Dean does a good job in making the story come alive.

I loved reading this book but listening to Michael Pauley bringing Nolan and Dallas to life brought it to a new level. A really outstanding and solid job from Michael on one of Sloane's many great books.

Simply outstanding

This was my first audible experience and I really enjoyed experiencing it through Michael Pauley’s lovely narration. His voice really brought the characters alive in my head -especially Nolan’s! It was a great reading that just emphasised Sloane Kennedy’s flawless storytelling.

Absolutely loved it!!
