This is an epic sweep of over 2000 years of British history brought to life by following the lives of fictional families across the generations. I enjoyed every one of the over 48 hours of recording narrated with verve and skill by Andrew Wincott whose voice will be familiar to those who listen to the Archers as he plays Adam Macy.

A tour de force of historical fiction

I read this some years ago and it was a rivetting read as are others in Edward Rutherfurds historical /location series. However the narrator, whilst reading clearly, has so soothing a tone, I found it very easy to switch off. That of course might say more about my powers of concentration than the skills of the narrator.

Later! When writing the above I might have been a tad distracted, so today settled down to a serious listen. But yet again the sonorous tones of the reader made me lose my place, have to go back again and again, until I gave up!

I am an enthusiastic Audible listener, and a good book read by a good reader is a major joy giver, but not this one! I will ask for a refund.
