Jerry White's London in the Twentieth Century, winner of the Wolfson Prize, is a masterful account of the city’s most tumultuous century by its leading expert.

In 1901 no other city matched London in size, wealth and grandeur. Yet it was also a city where poverty and disease were rife. For its inhabitants, such contradictions and diversity were the defining experience of the next century of dazzling change.

In the worlds of work and popular culture, politics and crime, through war, immigration and sexual revolution, Jerry White’s richly detailed and captivating history shows how the city shaped their lives and how it in turn was shaped by them.

This book tries to mix reflection on recent events with a reasoned commentary on historical fact. The second half of the century is too recent to place some events in some sort of consensus of observation. So I found myself arguing with the context of some observations and disagreeing with some conclusive evidence.
I think there was a tendency to rely on personal experiences rather than sift through the views of others.
Th same cannot be levied on the review of the 1st half of the century.
Worth the effort of completing the whole book and indeed the those of earlier times.

I am a history buff and it is always good to hear the history that you personally lived through documented and dissected in this way. A must to all modern history scholars and interested buffs together. I have listened to all of these books now and it's sad to think, or is it, that I won't be around to listen to the next one. it would be nice to think that a quarter century book might be possible in a few years time?

Dry but informative
