A Gift—or a Burden?

A young knight, his head full of his grandfather’s tales of chivalry and dragon-slaying, single-handedly defeats the rebel Baron Reynald of Gorstone. The king rewards his courage with a fief of his own, but he must travel to the distant borderlands to claim it. Maybe it was not a gift after all?

Amid the harsh, unforgiving border country, the new Lord of Blackthorne struggles to rebuild a life from the ruins and forge key alliances. There are bandits in the strangely threatening woods, fierce sea tribes beyond the mountains, scant hope of help from the crown and strange powers in play.

As he and his people finally come to terms with rebuilding their lives, he receives a cryptic warning. A warlord is gathering outlaws to his banner in the west…

Jason's love, knowledge, and appreciation of medieval history is evident throughout this book, and the narrative and characters are all the better for it. Both grounded and fantastical, it was an enthralling tale to get lost in.

The narration is superb with every character being distinct. Very much looking forward to more of the Blackthorne chronicles

Enthralling medieval fantasy

Really enjoyable and gripping tale, the fastest I've gotten through an audiobook for a while. You can clearly feel Jason Kingsley's knowledge and passion for history coming through with a good mix of myth and realism, characters and events often sharing remarkable likeness to real world counterparts or long established folk tales all with Kinsley's own twist on it. Alex Wingfield also does a great job narrating and voicing the characters adding to their own individual personalities and bringing the story to life. Looking forward to continuing the tale of The Lord of Blackthorne.

I got this audiobook as I had watched Jason Kingsley's you tube videos for years and was interested to see he had written a novel set in the period he covers. It was well worth it, a great historical setting with an interesting fantasy element woven into the story. I look forward to seeing further tales from this series.

I enjoyed this greatly.
