About this listen

'A CHILLING new memoir by the daughter of mass murderer Fred West and his wife Rose describes the savage cruelty of her upbringing in 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester' DAILY MAIL

'Mae, I mean this ... I'm not a good person and I let all you children down ...' Rose West, HM PRISON DURHAM

It has taken over 20 years for Mae West to find the perspective and strength to tell her remarkable story: one of an abusive, violent childhood, of her serial killer parents and how she has rebuilt her life in the shadow of their terrible crimes.

Through her own memories, research and the letters her mother wrote to her from prison, Mae shares her emotionally powerful account of her life as a West. From a toddler locked in the deathly basement to a teen fighting off the sexual advances of her father, Mae's story is one of survival. It also answers the questions: how do you come to terms with knowing your childhood bedroom was a graveyard? How do you accept the fact your parents sexually tortured, murdered and dismembered young women? How do you become a mother yourself when you're haunted by the knowledge that your own mother was a monster? Why were you spared and how do you escape the nightmare?©2018 Neil McKay (P)2018 Orion Publishing Group

Best book I’ve listened to in a long, long time. As a fan of true crime I am always fascinated by what happens to the families of the criminals and victims and this has gone a long way to explain what goes on behind the scenes. I’m so proud of Mae for becoming a good mother and breaking the cycle of abuse, she told her story so well it left me shocked and with tears in my eyes.

As I listened to Love as Always, Mum xxx I had so many different emotions that I had to stop the book at times to assess how I was feeling about the details being told to me. The terrible details of Mae West and her sibling's lives while living at 25 Cromwell Street are scary, upsetting and at times beyond belief. I had real difficulty dealing with how Mae described the 'happy and normal times' she sometimes had as a child. I will keep how I feel about Rose West to myself, as I am sure Mae and her siblings have heard it all too many times already. There were times during her heart wrenching story when I wanted to give Mae a big hug. We cannot change what has happened, but I am so glad that Mae and her siblings are now moving on and having the happy times that they all deserve. My best wishes go out to Mae, and I hope that she and her family will have many joy full times in the future. Thank you for your bravery in writing this book. Regards...

An interesting and insightful perspective on horrific events. What a trooper Mae is. Really this is a must-listen for anyone interested in the West’s crimes. Be warned though: it’s hard-going in parts.

Incredible

This was a gripping listen that had me extremely emotional at times.

I felt compelled to leave a review not only because the book is excellent but also the narration from Julia Barrie is exceptional. Her use of a regional accent made it feel as if Mae herself was speaking.

Highly recommended.
