Celine Brennan should be riding the high of her recent promotion to detective, but instead she's been saddled with a case no one can seem to solve with murders so gruesome others before her have quit. Not to mention, there's something suspicious with a new club in town and her focus keeps being pulled from the case she should be devoting her attention to.
Zavier Lockwood is old. Three-hundred-years old to be precise and he's bored because of it. Killing the scum of Chicago and cleaning up the streets since the cops can't seem to do it is his favorite pastime. Until he lays eyes on Celine. Soon, he finds his obsession with her far more tempting than murder. After all, no vampire can resist the allure of their mate.
As their paths cross thanks to Zavier's uncanny ability to be wherever Celine is they both come to realize there's something far more nefarious going on in the city they both love. They'll have to work together to get to the bottom of it, but what happens when Celine realises the man she's falling for isn't only not human, but he's the same one committing the crimes she's supposed to solve?

What make this even better than I was hoping for is that Teddy Hamilton's performance brings out the darker tones in Zav, but I'm not mad about it! I had previously imagined Zav's voice as something more akin to the irreverent, comedic lilt of Jacob Morgan, but actually Teddy's voice carries the weight of the character's 300 years and really grounds his strength, while also still making you giggle and kick your feet at some of his ridiculous antics and just how bad he has it for Celine. It somehow make Zav feel even more three dimensional (and loveable) than he already was.
Likewise, Casey Holloway's performance really made Celine 'click' for me. I thought the character was a fab FMC before, but this added component really brings out her best attributes and, due to the slower pace of digesting the story, allowed me to see elements I had either missed or glossed over in previous reads. There's definitely a natural chemistry between the two voices which also really helps the listener buy into Zav and Celine's relationship as it develops.
This whole story just makes me grin like a loon, even during the more tense or emotional momemts. Every character feels alive (or undead as the case may be 😉), and it's so easy to get swept up into their worlds. From Celine's concerns about her father to Ava's rocky relationship to the Big Bad's obsessive tendencies, you feel everything!
The skill Aura Hayes has on display here in terms of creating a full living world on the page is incredible. I appreciate that it is set in the "real" world, but as a person who's never been to Chicago, not once did I feel lost in the space, or confused by descriptions of the characters' surroundings. Even though you don't interact with a huge number of characters outside the main cast, somehow it remains so easy to see them in this bustling metropolis. The best example is Tom's wider family. We never see them, are never introduced to them properly, never even really get to know how many of them there are... but the authors have planted enough seeds of information that it becomes impossible to not imagine them bustling around the restaurant.
I am INCREDIBLY excited for book two, and am so glad I got the chance to reintegrate myself properly with Zav and Celine in this was first!
Even better than I wished for!
