About this listen

A once-wealthy family closes ranks when one of their own is shot, leaving Maigret - along with a troublesome new magistrate - to pick his way through their secrets.

It was as if suddenly, long ago, life had stopped here - not the life of the man lying on the bed but the life of the house, the life of its world, and even the factory chimney that could be seen through the curtains looked obsolete and absurd.

As with every story produced by the Master, Maigret and the Reluctant Witnesses is a masterclass in understatedly brilliant authorship. A wonderful story, beautifully read by Gareth Armstrong, focuses on the everyday fears and desires of characters that George Simenon clearly cares for. There is no attempt at judgment, simply understanding and acknowledgement of the foibles of people whose personalities and needs zing off of each page. There is a reason for the factual statement that Simenon was one of the greatest writers of the twentieth - or any - century: this novel confirms the fact.

Incomparable.
