Simenon's writing is as immaculate as ever. His creation is one of the greatest in all of literature. Armstrong is among the very finest vocal actors, and he is a perfect fit for the irrascible Maigret. Sheer perfection.

In chapter 4 Maigret is having lunch with a private detective. The reader does a fake slapping as if he's eating. The sound is absolutely disgusting 🤢

Good but the performance wasn't as good as usual

The quality of Simenon's writing varies dramatically. This is dreadful. At that point in his life his understanding of New York was slim. Nothing rings true - not bars, or a grand hotel or the Bronx or any of the characters. The final scenes of the story, based around a long telephone call, are absolutely ludicrous. Gareth Armstrong, even though he has a relatively small range of character voices, narrates beautifully all the other Maigret books I have so far listened to. But here he is struggling badly - partly because most of the characters he is working with are unbelievable - but also because many British actors aren't able to do convincing American accents. No one in this sounds remotely like a New Yorker.
