About this listen

The day Althea buried her mother she learned she was a witch.

When a self-proclaimed witch shows up at her mother’s funeral, she brings more than sympathy for Althea’s loss. Luella insists Althea comes from a long line of witches and that she is the coven’s only hope for survival. While she doesn’t believe Luella, she agrees to visit her family home in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Althea assumed she’d sell the house and move on with her life, but a murder complicates her plans. She is a prime suspect, but she learns she isn’t the only one in her family accused of murder. Her mother left New Orleans after a spell resulted in the death of two witches.

Arriving during Mardi Gras season, the exuberance of the food, music, and celebrations overwhelms Althea. But it’s nothing compared to the paranormal world she discovers. As if witches weren’t enough, Althea meets vampires, werewolves, and a talking cat.

She may going insane, but Althea is determined to stay in New Orleans long enough to solve the murder. Becoming an amateur sleuth wasn’t part of Althea’s plans, but neither was becoming a witch. Will she accept her magical inheritance so she can discover the truth about her past, and her future? She might not have a choice if she wants to stop a killer.

Mardi Gras and Magic is the first book in The Witches of the French Quarter Mysteries. Join Althea as she explores the French Quarter and the world of witches, vampires, Voodoo, werewolves, and magical creatures. Thea must investigate supernatural mysteries to unearth long-buried secrets and to find her own place in this world.

I enjoyed every minute of this trip and don't think New Orleans has ever been quite as magical or colourful before. I really liked the characters, even through the story contained vampires which normally just creeps me out but what supernatural story would be complete with them? or a talking cat or ghosts.
Althea was a great main character with just enough naivety to get herself into trouble and enough magic to get herself out, well okay call for help at least. Especially as she is a novice with a lot to learn. The main murder did get solved but as the story progressed more deaths were uncovered and there are also few unanswered question, however as the main character addressed it herself, I am sure they will get answered as the series unfolds. I can't wait for the next book.

Althea is at a loss with the death of her mother and with her daughter off traveling the world. So when Luella arrives at the funeral claiming she can spill all Luella's mother secrets, she's not sure what to believe but the offer is to tempting to ignore. When she arrives in New Orleans, a place her mother forbade her to visit, she discovers she is now the owner of a house with a coven of witches as tenants. That's not the biggest secret her mother kept from her, as she was one of them Althea is too. Does she unlock her magic? Something she doesn't believe in or just sell the house? Before she can decide one of the witches is found dead in the fountain, a witch that didn't want Althea around in the first plkace.
Under suspicion of murder Althea is told not to leave town and she soon learn that the witch in the fountain wasn't the first coven member to have died recently, her mother included. Can she find the killer and clear her name? So she can get away from all the nonsense in New Orleans or will she remember she didn't want to leave in the first place.
I liked the narrator. She made it entertaining by giving the characters some interesting voices.

This Witchy world is set in modern times and over laps with the non-magical people. Loved the addition of the local history of New Orleans.

When Althea attends her mothers funeral she gets more than she barged for and woman saying she's a witch is just the beginning. The world as Althea knows it, is about to change. This story caught my attention from the very start. the characters, the mystery and the magic. Great first in a new series. The narration is excellent.
