If you love a dark romance, full of romance suspence and one obsessive male.
Matteo chases what he wants without hesitation. What he wants is Rain. This book is full of atmosphere, with amazing chemistry between Rain and Matteo.
A great dark romance.

Now, it is entirely possible that readers who have followed the previous books in the series will have a stronger understanding of the mythology and worldbuilding. Since this was my first book in the series, I often felt like I was missing important context. Matteo’s “beast” felt like it appeared out of nowhere for me as a reader. We learn that his brother Carmine and Mason have active beasts while Matteo’s has apparently remained dormant, yet his beast is somehow powerful enough to overpower them both. I kept waiting for a clearer explanation of what these beasts actually are, where they came from, and why Matteo’s suddenly activated around Rain.
That said, I honestly found the paranormal aspect more interesting than some of the other storylines being explored. Matteo himself had the strongest hook for me - the mystery surrounding his past, his beast awakening, and the secrets tied to his family. I wanted more focus on that storyline because I think the concept itself has a lot of potential.
Rain’s storyline, however, was much harder for me to connect with. Her childhood SA trauma is introduced very early, but I struggled with how it was handled throughout the story. For me personally, if a book opens with something that heavy, I want to see a meaningful emotional arc or some sense of triumph and healing attached to it. Instead, it often felt like the trauma existed simply to explain her drug use and distrust, and I was left questioning what purpose certain scenes ultimately served within the larger story. Bringing the predator back into the storyline especially felt unnecessary to me and distracted from what I felt was the stronger central plot involving Matteo and his beast.
The addiction storyline also felt difficult to reconcile at times, especially later in the story when pregnancy becomes part of the narrative. Some of the character decisions simply did not feel believable to me considering Matteo’s role as an FBI agent and the direction the relationship was heading.
Overall, this ended up being an okay read for me. I do think the series has an interesting foundation and enough intriguing concepts that I may continue it at some point, but it will probably stay lower on my TBR for now.
The standout element for me was absolutely the narration. Lucas gave Matteo’s beast mode a dark, intimidating presence that honestly reminded me a bit of Darkness from the movie Legend, while Charlie brought a lot of sass and personality to Rain. Both narrators did a fantastic job bringing energy and emotion to the audiobook experience.
Not the Mafia Romance I expected
