About this listen

An extraordinarily vivid and beautifully written first novel exploring the hidden world of the geisha.

Memoirs of a Geisha is a rare and utterly engaging experience. The extraordinary tale of Sayuri, a young girl who grows up to become an acclaimed geisha, it spans a quarter of a century, from 1929 to the post-war years of Japan's dramatic history, and opens a window onto a half-hidden world of eroticism and enchantment, exploitation and degradation.

I didn't realise this book was shortened until reading the reviews, but did have my suspicions given the relationships seem to lack detail and depth and things like the war, or everyday geisha activities seem glossed over. It did give me a taster though and I'd like to read the full book, and the narrator is lovely...might just watch the film.

This is a dissapointing abridged version. Many years ago I read this book. It did many things including giving me a life long love of Japanese culture. I loved the book so much, I mourned it's ending for more than a month later. Never has a book since done this to me. There is a moment. The Moment. It's a description that has held me spellbound and captivated as it were. It takes place under the apple blossom trees with the Chairman. It is the most exquisite description of the revealing of a woman giving herself to another man without ever touching each other. The symbolism of the moment to anyone like myself, who isn't knowing of Japanese and Geshia culture is described beautifully. It is integral to the story
This moment was not in this audible book as were many others. So very disappointing.

Honestly speaking I am very critical when it gets to audio books as the narration isn't appropriate most of the times.

This is not the case for this book thou. The Narrator they have chosen and her accent matches perfectly the main character "Sayuri". Its a breath taking story of a young girl and her trials. I would highly recommend the book/audio book to anyone. From a personal stand point the book/audio book is definitely worth the readers/listeners time.

I liked the narrators voice, very calming. But there are pieces missing from the book, which I didn't enjoy. All in all it was good, but if listening whilst reading the book, it skips over parts and you have to flip pages to keep up.

Beautiful narration
