About this listen

Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. Sayuri's story begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. It concludes with World War II when the geisha houses are forced to close and Sayuri reinvents herself and finds a rare kind of freedom on her own terms.©1997 Arthur Golden; Copyright ©1998 by Random House, Inc. A beautifully written and narrated book that I found very hard to stop listening to whenever I turned it on. Full of fascinating history and a story I shall definitely listen to again. I saw the film after hearing the story - I would not liked to have done it the other way round, although the film does keep quite closely to the book.

Brilliant story. An eye opener on a different take on society and women's place versus men. It never ceases to amaze me that no matter where you go it's the same world over. Men's abuse of power over women . Having said that this is first and last a love story. A story of triumph over opposition, a story of humanity. A story of a very different life. The comments regarding the narration are very unfair. It is a story told by a lady looking back on her remarkable life. A life of very defined behaviour told very well by the narrator. I found the narration very good to be honest and appropriate..

Fascinating insight into Japanese culture

I loved this book, have listened numerous times. At first I found the narrators voice robotic, but after a while she sounded just right for the part, she adapted her voice well for each character and I didn't want it to end. A must listen.
