Summary

Eve Dallas is one tough cop. She's got no problem dealing with a holiday reveler in a red suit who plunges 37 stories and gives new meaning to the term "sidewalk Santa". But when she gets back to the station and Trudy Lombard shows up, it's all Eve can do to hold it together.

Instantly, she's plunged back into the past, to the days when she was a vulnerable, traumatized girl - trapped in foster care with the twisted woman who now sits in front of her, smiling.

Trudy claims she just wanted to see how Eve was doing. But Eve's husband, Roarke, suspects otherwise - and his suspicions prove correct when Trudy arrives at his office demanding money in exchange for keeping the ugly details of his wife's childhood a secret. Barely restraining himself, Roarke shows her the door - and makes it clear that she'd be wise to get out of New York and never bother him or his wife again.

But just a few days later, Trudy's found on the floor of her hotel room, a mess of bruises and blood.

A cop to the core, Eve is determined to solve the case, if only for the sake of Trudy's bereaved son. Unfortunately, Eve is not the only one to have suffered at this woman's hands, and she and Roarke will follow a circuitous, dangerous path to find out who turned this victimizer into a victim.

The humour to combat the horror
It’s why I love the series. No punches are pulled, the reader is given all the clues and can try to work it out. The Christmas decoration scene was hilarious. First time I heard it, it was a surprise to me.

Great Series and this book is as good as the rest.

I find this one hard to come back to because the character of Trudi, the manipulative foster mother, is just so awful. But at the same time she is a masterly creation and quite compelling. And Eve's sucker-punched response is convincing too.

Not the strongest of her plots, but well written and very well read, with the usual good combo of humour and drama.

Brilliantly drawn foster mother from hell

The story for the last book didn't really grab me, but this one I read in one day. Excellent book, story and narration there really isn't much else to say but a real winner.

Excellent

It takes a lot to traumatise Eve Dallas, she has seen a lot of brutal crime and survived even more, but with one sentence Trudy manages to reduce Eve to a quivering wreck. She instantly flashes back to the terrified and broken child who was systematically bullied and terrorised by the evil Trudy, she is still struggling to regain her equilibrium days later when Trudy is found dead and beaten.
Eve has always stood for the dead, no matter who they were when living, she stands for them in death and Trudy will be no different. This case is an emotional rollercoaster for Eve, there are a vast number of suspects and all are very happy that Trudy is finally dead and unable to terrorise them any more, but whilst they all have motive, few have means. The simplest answer is usually the correct one, no matter how improbable...she just needs to prove it. Eve once again shows that not everyone is who they seem to be and that truth can be heartbreaking for the innocent.
I listened to this on Audible.

Shockingly brutal...or is it karma?
