About this listen

London, 1882. Alec Lonsdale, a young reporter on the Pall Mall Gazette, is working on a story about a fatal house fire. But the postmortem on the victim produces shocking results: Patrick Donovan's death was no accident. But why would someone murder a humble shop assistant and steal part of his brain?

When a second body is discovered, its throat cut, and then a third, Lonsdale and his spirited female colleague, Hulda Friederichs, begin to uncover evidence of a conspiracy that reaches to the highest echelons of Victorian society.

I think this is the first book I've read by Simon Beaufort, but I can't wait to read more. It is fast paced, very exciting, and action packed throughout. There are believable characters who all have a place in this thrilling story. Don't miss out. Brilliantly read by Jonathan Keeble, who brings the story, and the characters, to life. Awesome listen.

Tense, exciting, thrilling !

Grisly murders, eugenics and mad scientists in a well crafted mystery. The squalor of the East End is graphically portrayed.

Convoluted Victorian mystery

I really enjoyed this first book in what I hope will become a series. Jonathan Keeble is probably my favourite narrator so that was a big plus. The book , set in victorian England , touched on the more outlandish scientific theories of the day. The protagonists are journalists , which makes a change. The story was gripping and the book rattled along at a great pace . Looking forward to the next day me .

Really enjoyed this!
