About this listen
An epic and romantic debut adventure fantasy, where a necromancer trying to resurrect her sister gets embroiled in bigger, world-ending plans instead
'A transportive dark fantasy readers will eagerly devour’ Emily Thiede, author of This Vicious Grace
Necromancer Azul del Arroyo only wants one thing: to steal her sister back from Death by reclaiming her sister's bones. But the Emissary of the Lord Death will do anything to stop her, no matter how alluring he finds her …
As their paths collide, they're drawn into a deadly game of pawns and power with a scheming court, a faceless witch, and the fate of the lands hanging in the balance.
For long ago the gods raised the continents, binding them with their own bones to keep humanity alive. But in an era when the gods' sacrifice has been forgotten, Death might not be the only resentful god Azul must defy.
Swashbuckling, grand, and tragically romantic, Mistress of Bones is a can't-miss start to a duology about love, loss, and, of course, death.
©2025 Maria Z. Medina (P)2025 Macmillan AudioI adored how it placed sibling relationships front-and-centre and made the romantic ones more subtle. It served the story so well to show not just our FMC Azul's devotion to her sister, but other familial bonds that were complex and fully realised. In a fantasy market saturated with enemies to lovers romances, it was so refreshing to read a book where this element was definitely present (and done really well, it has to be said!), but not the whole axis of the plot either.
While some reviews of this title have mentioned the multiple povs and time-hops making it difficult to connect with the story, that wasn't the case at all for me. I love a twisty fantasy novel with a large cast of characters, multiple povs and political scheming as well as action, and I admire an author who has the guts to plunge us into this kind of story without too much hand-holding, really letting the wonder soak through. The pov switches and time hops served to introduce a diverse cast woven together extremely deftly, so that before I really knew it, multiple plot threads were converging to devastating effect. Medina isn't afraid of writing plot twists that not only blindside you, but break your heart as well.
As for the audio, Ana Osorio's narration was very well done. Her reading felt like the way a true storyteller would read it - unhurried, wanting to settle you into the story and delight you with the world being evoked. Her expressiveness was wonderful, and her skill at narrating different characters meant that each one had a distinct voice.
Overall, I loved Mistress of Bones, and I eagerly await the sequel!
Twisty fantasy with refreshing emphasis on sibling love
