About this listen

London 1885:

For Lord Everett Stanley, escaping his fate seemed impossible. As the second son, he’s destined for ordination and the life of a Reverend, but he’s hiding a dangerous secret. The laws punishing homosexuality by hanging may have been repealed but he and others of his kind are far from safe. Given no other choice, they take solace in the underground molly houses of London. Now that fragile world is threatened when the East End is rocked by a series of gruesome murders.

Inspector Archibald Franklin worked hard to overcome his working-class roots, making a name for himself as a respected inspector of Whitechapel’s H Division, but when he begins to investigate the deaths of several beautiful young men, fate throws him into the path of the handsome and enigmatic Lord Stanley. His gut instinct tells him the young lord knows more about the murders than he lets on, but the closer he gets, the more Everett calls to him in a way he’s tried to deny his whole life.

As a reign of terror grips London, they are drawn together in order to stop a monster, but for Archie, the growing feelings he has for Everett are a betrayal of the very laws he has sworn to uphold. And as the killer closes in, the two men find themselves bound together by a passion that may be their ultimate salvation or their utter destruction…

I found the narrator irritating, which spoilt the story for me. The plot wasn't very good either, or not good enough to outweigh the voice.

The story isn't that believable

performance from Joel was great as always and while the supernatural elements do pop in very last minute it was an enjoyable listen with good characters, but wow does the last chapter really ruin the feelings the book develops seemingly having the happy ending ripped away and ending on a sour cliffhanger, i hope the second book is released soon just so it can either undo or bring some light to where this one ends

Great Overall Sour Ending

This book, catches your imagination from the very first words, the intensity of each character and their emotion is so raw, I personally was left drained and so enthralled as to what was going to happen next, one moment I am in bliss, then scared, and no shortage of sadness.

If you choose to read or listen to this book, which i entreat you to do so! It’s an absolute must read! Prepare yourself for a journey into the sublime mysteries of london in an age where being gay and acting on it carried a life sentence. You will journey into dark alleys and experience fear like no other, there are three main characters in this story, with very powerful supporting characters, each so well defined, finding an emotion for each was immediate.

The story will shock you, how unimportant life and death was during the Victorian, slum conditions where even a child was a commodity, houses in addresses then so derelict, where walls bare witness to violence and horror, which today are beyond cost to the average man and once could tell stories to make you weep of the dirt, stench and depravity.

Love formed by a collision of circumstances from two worlds which should never meet, a passion so deep it can’t be denied.

I have not in my life as a prolific reader come across a book which has affected me so deeply. Thank you for bringing this into my life. RVR

I do hope there is a following storyline. I was positively upset by the ending of this book and find I have no follow up book to buy. Not happy.

Excellent story line and characters
