Starting over was never part of the playbook. Fresh off a failed marriage and years of putting everyone else first, Emmy Hudson returns to her small hometown determined to rebuild a life for her and her teenage son, Jace. With her brother close by and Jace joining the once-elite Mayhem Hockey Club, it seems like the perfect second chance. Beckett Conway is back in Linwood for the worst reasons: a blown-out hip, a tanked NHL season, and a mom whose health is declining too fast for his liking. Coaching the local youth hockey team wasn’t on his rehab checklist, but watching Jace sneak onto his backyard pond to practice brings back everything he loved about this little mountain town. Too bad Jace’s mom is sarcastic, stubborn, and somehow the most attractive woman he’s ever bantered with. As if that wasn’t enough, Emmy is his best friend’s sister and in charge of clearing him to play again. Sparks fly, lines blur, and before long, Emmy discovers that maybe finding herself means letting someone else in, even if that someone was the last person she expected to fall for.

Vanessa Moyen and Lee Samuels provide a dual narration for this fabulous story. Moyen is Emmy and I loved how she tried to keep her heart safe. Each nuance held the attraction, but her head kept it at bay. Samuels is Beckett and I was falling in his first chapter. He finds Beckett's warmth and frustrations and builds his voice around it all. I loved these two together.

Following her failed marriage and messy divorce, newly single mum Emmy moves back to her hometown with her teenage son determine to rebuild her life with the help of her brother. Meanwhile, NHL player Beckett is also back in town spending time with his mom whilst recovering from a hip injury. He decides to stay longer and takes up coaching to help his old hockey team. Sparks fly when they see each other, but there is soo much complications there; Beckett’s best friend happens to be Emmy’s brother, Beckett is now coaching Emmy’s son Jace, and Emmy is now Beckett’s new physical therapist. 😅
This was such a great book! Funny, emotional, swoony, spicy, and just about provided all the feels! I especially loved the characters themselves. I loved how Emmy was sarcastic, funny, but also loving and vulnerable. Beckett was also the ultimate book boyfriend; the way he supported her and takes her son under his wings, was just goals! Together they were the perfect match and had such great chemistry. Plus, the found family aspect of the story made the reading experience all the more enjoyable. AND don’t sleep on the banter in this! It had me giggling throughout!
Overall, this was a cute small town, brother’s best friend, sports romance. The characters were wonderful, the storyline well written, with great pacing. I definitely enjoyed and recommend it!
Finally, the dual narration provided by Vanessa Moyen and Lee Samuels was excellent! They added all the emotions needed to make this story entertaining and enjoyable. Moyen really brought out the strength, independence, but vulnerability within Emmy. Whilst Samuels was great with portraying the gruff but golden retriever, swoony, and loving nature of Beckett. Amazing at bringing the characters and the story to life!

This was my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. Beckett and Emmy have such great chemistry, and he does the sweetest things for her. If acts of service is your love language, Beckett Conway is your man. He’s also the perfect match for Emmy and her son, Jace. Emmy is recently divorced and has moved back home with her son. Her ex was a terrible husband and an even worse dad, and Beckett loves and supports them in the way they deserve. There’s a scene at the end of the book that I’m not going to mention – because you have to experience it for yourself – but it had me melting into a puddle on the floor.
One of the best parts of the story for me was the relationship between Beckett and Emmie’s son, Jace. It really highlighted why I love books where the MMC coaches the FMC’s son: on top of the father-son bond that naturally forms as they spend more time together, they also share a passion for hockey – and that coach-player connection adds another layer, with Beckett wanting to guide him, support him, and see him succeed.
I loved the small town, found family vibes of this book. The people in this community really support each other, and you see it right from the very first hockey game. I loved the banter and camaraderie among the team, and the side characters were great. Frankie, the head trainer for Beckett’s team, was a barrel of laughs with his ridiculous jokes – he was one of my favourite side characters. And if you like sports romance for the rush of the gameplay, you’ll love this. Hockey isn’t my sport – I’m a football girlie – but the gameplay scenes were written so well that I still got that same rush you get from watching any fast-paced sport.
This story was really entertaining, and the narration only added to that. Vanessa Moyen and Lee Samuels are narrators I haven’t listened to much before, but I really enjoyed their performance and I’ll definitely be looking out for more of their work. They brought out both the humour and the warmth in the story, and I loved their different character voices.
On top of the humour and swoony romance, I loved watching both Emmy and Beckett grow into the best versions of themselves. Overall, this was such a heartfelt, fun read, and I can’t wait to dive into more of this author’s books.

This book is laugh-out-loud hilarious, heart-melting tender, and surprisingly deep all at the same time..
What I loved most – the relationships:
♡ Emmy & Jace – real, messy, loving single-mom/teen-son dynamic that never feels forced.
♡ Emmy & Beckett – slow-burn perfection. He sees her exhaustion, her strength, her walls… and just quietly stands there until she’s ready to let him in. The way he loves her and Jace? I was a puddle.
♡ Found family everywhere – from the moms to the team to Beckett’s own family. It’s handled with so much care and zero sugar-coating.
🎧 The audio is absolute fire! 🔥🤌🏻
Vanessa Moyen gives Emmy the perfect mix of exhausted-mom energy and sharp wit – you feel every eye-roll and every crack in her voice. Lee Samuels as Becket… that man is doing God's work! His gravelly tenderness in the quiet moments? Chef’s kiss. Duet narration makes every text message and late-night conversation feel deliciously real.
Spice: solid 3.5~4 🌶️ – hot, emotional, and very “he falls first and worships her” coded. 🤌🏻
Bottom line: If you love hockey romance that’s actually about healing, motherhood, friendship, and a hero who shows up exactly when you need him… grab this immediately. It’s funny, it’s steamy, it’s heartfelt, and it will hug your soul.
