Considered one of China's great classical novels, Wu Ch'êng-ên's Journey to the West was translated by Arthur Waley in abridged form as Monkey in 1942 and has delighted English readers ever since. It is a riveting adventure story about a priest's quest to obtain holy Buddhist scriptures for the Tang emperor; joining him on this rollicking journey: Sandy, Pigsy, and the mischievous monkey king, Sun Wukong, whose flying cloud and magic cudgel are never far from his infamous deeds. Waley's accessible rendition of Wu Ch'êng-ên's novel has become a classic in its own right: Gods, demons, and disobedient monkey spirits all come alive in this entertaining work.

A magical story narrated by Kenneth Williams, what could be a better listen?
One caveat, the sound engineer has failed to prevent an intrusive echo at some points of the recording.

A Wonderful Mystical Journey Through China to India.

Kenneth Williams reads with passion and panache. It's obviously an old recording and can be a bit echoey.

Having mistakenly bought a newer translation by another narator - what a car crash that was - I was overjoyed to find this version.

This is the definitive English translation and you dont get much better Keneth Williams!

It is the original Arthur Waley translation that hasn't been topped. Like most English transations it doesn't feature all of the adventures that span four columns in the original Chinese. As with tales of those times they tend to be rather repetitive so this version is great.

Dive in for some monkey magic.

Well read and lots of fun.

The characters feel like friends you never knew. I suspect that Pigys is supposed to sound like Bernard Bresslaw, which makes him even more fun to listen to.

Kenneth Williams narration is fabulous.
