About this listen

Having delivered a particularly stirring speech at his recently deceased colleague's funeral, Monsieur Pamplemousse is more than a little disturbed when the coffin explodes during the ceremony. Luckily, his faithful hound Pommes Frites gave out a warning cry just in time, so there were no casualties. But, who exactly is behind this explosion? And was the same person responsible for his late co-worker's demise?

This latest in their wild romps find the entertaining duo causing chaos at a prestigious hotel, where the dish of the day is red herrings. With delectable wit, sharp dialogue and a marvellous sense of timing, this is the latest in the adventures of Monsieur Pamplemousse and his beloved bloodhound.

Michael Bond writes well generally, but goes over the top. So much so, that I lost the plot less than half-way into the story. Lost in the gaudy detail. In fact, the manner is so tongue-in-cheek that I couldn’t take the story seriously (surely, any story has to take itself seriously, to proceed in its own terms, allowing “ the willing suspension of disbelief” on the part of the reader; but in this tale, it is as if the author was frequently giving you a “knowing” wink: all a bit self-conscious). So I gave up. I like to take my fun- reading seriously! But I’m still Paddington’s number one fan !!!

Excellent funny tale

A real pleasure to revisit these books. The characters are charming, the plot funny and sinister by turns, and the narrator gets it exactly right without the dreadful cod French accent. I shall be reading more.

‘Ello ‘ello for detective fiction

The story was a no brainer! It was easy to work out the plot early on! However, Michael Bond's writing and Bill Wallis' telling kept me entertained throughout!

Daft fun!
