Summary

Mostly Harmless is the fifth and final part in Douglas Adams' much-loved cult classic series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, read by Martin Freeman.

Arthur Dent hadn't had a day as bad as this since the Earth had been blown up.

After years of galactic wanderings, Arthur finally settles on the small planet Lamuella and becomes a sandwich maker. Looking forward to a quiet life, his plans are thrown awry by the unexpected arrival of his daughter.

There's nothing worse than a frustrated teenager with a copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in their hands. When she runs away, Arthur goes after her determined to save her from the horrors of the universe.

After all – he's encountered most of them before . . .

...and if only he had been here to write more. A fantastic book and a great performance.

If only it were longer....

If Douglas Adams could have chosen someone to read his books I think he would have chosen Martin Freeman. Perhaps he did. Or is he dead? Regardless, Martin's perfectly dry delivery makes him the ideal carrier for Douglas' perfectly dry wit. Between them they had me laughing out loud and the Adams-Freeman combination is one I keep coming back to.

Loved It

So why is the actor chosen to read it so entirely ignorant of the story that he fluffs one of the biggest jokes of the series by mispronouncing ‘Mueller’? Why does he seem to have so grossly misunderstood the characters?

A missed opportunity, typical of the shameless cash-ins that have proliferated since Douglas Adams’ death.

It's almost twenty years since I read a trilogy in four parts, maybe my vision is rose tinted, but I can say this is definitely not up to the same standard as the first four books. It's quirky and funny in places, but the action is all rather forced.
Of course if you've got to the fourth book you'll read this, and probably enjoy it, but try not to get your hopes up too high. If you're new to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, make sure you read them in order.

Okay, but not Adams' best
