Meanwhile, the shell-shocked Septimus Smith is struggling with his life on the same London day.

What a terrible shame that, when Juliet Stevenson has just finished her admirable rendition of this marvellous novel, in stead of allowing us a moment to reflect, Audible shatters the magic of the last lines with an utterly crass, grating, American voice telling us that Ardable hopes we hiave enjoyed this pragramme.

It’s difficult to see how anyone could perform this better. Juliet Stevenson’s subtly modulated voice makes every sentence of this book clear at first listening, rendering the ebb and flow of Virginia Woolf’s wave-like prose with a wonderful sense of flow and rhythm. Perfect.

The only wrinkle here is the crass, tin-eared interjection of the robotic marketeer’s ‘Audible hopes you enjoyed this recording’ within a nanosecond of Stevenson finishing the book’s final sentence. Very insensitive editing.

The storyline centres around Mrs Dalloway, the society of the day and her friends who have turns in first person narrative to muse and comment.
Set a few years after the first world war it is a social commentary of upper class Britain of the day; exposing the morays, prejudices and tragedies of the period. It is exquisitely and subtlety written , certainly easier to listen than to read, having failed in the past, but does ask for a degree of commitment.

I adore Juliet Stevenson’s skills, which are made for this book.
