About this listen

Mrs Pringle, the lugubrious school cleaner, has always been a favourite character in the Fairacre series. Here we trace Maud Pringle's life from childhood visits to the village from her Caxley home.

Mrs Pringle is a very likeable character despite her curmudgeonly ways and I have enjoyed reading about her in many of the Miss Read books. This isn't one of my favourite Fairacre books but it was a pleasant story to listen to while travelling in the car. The narrator is excellent and very well suited to the books by Miss Read.

Gentle Escapism

Another glorious Miss Read, read at a pace to savour. Uplifting, transporting, hilarious- and with a lightness of touch in common with all Miss Read’s that draw humour and pathos with unsentimental poignancy. The deft descriptions of the natural world are are so real - and read as if they were being observed. I wish all Miss Read books were read like this....

Only Gwen Watford reads this so brilliantly

A very pleasing story of the inhabitants of Fairacre and especially Mrs Pringle-fierce but humorous character.
