About this listen

Imagine nine women meeting. Tea and cake are on the coffee table. They’ve come together to share their love of books. They are friends. They trust each other. It’s a happy gathering. What could be more harmless? Scratch the surface and look closer.

One is lonely, one is desperate and one of them is a killer.

When the body of a woman is discovered on a Cambridge common, DCI Barrett and DI Palmer are called to investigate. But the motive behind the crime isn’t clear...and it all leads back to a book club.

As the lies, volatile friendships and tension among the group rise to the surface, DCI Barrett and DI Palmer must work out the motive and track down a cold-blooded killer. But just when they think they are on the right track, a twist in the case throws them off course....

Betsy Reavley is the best-selling author of multiple thrillers including The Optician's Wife, The Quiet Ones and Frailty. This title is an unmissable new whodunnit which will appeal to fans of authors like Cara Hunter, Rachel Abbott, Faith Martin and LJ Ross.

I very rarely do this, but I am not finishing this book. The story is quite interesting but I find the narrator’s style to be very wooden and irritating. I’m afraid this one is not for me.

Terrible narration

I found this whodunnit (an example of “cosy crime”) very difficult to listen to without shouting at the loudspeaker. It’s written by someone without knowledge of police procedures (arrests without evidence is a red flag) or seemingly geography. The action is set in Cambridge which at one stage was apparently in Hertfordshire.
The reader has difficulty with unfamiliar words (“VerUlam” for example) and I echo other reviewers in finding her universal “working class” accent grating.

Badly read and poorly written

Hmmm…. Glad it was a freebie.

It wasn’t awful just - a bit dull and very midsommer Murder-y really!

It felt almost light and comical in places despite the content being about a ‘serious murder plot’…. Not at all sophisticated.

I agree with some other reviewers in that the narration made the characters sound as though they had learning difficulties and none were likeable at all.

Once I discovered ‘whodidit’, I just ended the book as in truth had totally lost interest and wanted to find next listen…

Not an awful listen but just incredibly dull….

Very Midsommer Murder-y!

Easy listening, good narrator, fun story full of credible characters and their interactions.
Light, realistic, truthful. Very happy to have chosen this title. Not come across the author before. Will look out for her now.

A compulsive listen.
