Summary

London, 1945. The capital is shrouded in the darkness of the blackout, and mystery abounds in the parks after dusk. During a stroll through Regent's Park, Bruce Mallaig witnesses two men acting suspiciously around a footbridge. In a matter of moments, one of them has been murdered; Mallaig's view of the assailant but a brief glimpse of a ghastly face in the glow of a struck match.

The murderer's noiseless approach and escape seems to defy all logic, and even the victim's identity is quickly thrown into uncertainty. Lorac's shrewd yet personable C.I.D. man, MacDonald, must set to work once again to unravel this near-impossible mystery.

Thoroughly enjoyed this recording : well drawn characters, effective atmosphere, an interesting problem and very well narrated .

Excellent period crime story

This is one of E C R Lorac's best novels. Full of wonderful characters. This Naration is beautifuly done, with one (in particular) hysterical characterisation based (im sure) on a certain famous person. A fun clear story, not quite an impossible crime but with elements.

One of her best

This is my second audiobook from Lorac. I enjoyed this one much more. The story is more thought out and the reader makes it easy to follow along. Such a delight.

Interesting story, well read

I really enjoyed the period atmosphere and love ECR Lorac. I liked the ‘normal’ voice of the narrator but he seemed to have the ability to perform only two female voices, better and less wealthy in nature. Consequently ‘class’ of characters sounded much the same, which I found very confusing. It was much the same with the male characters, though the nasal whine that characterised the female ones was less irritating. The female character performances seemed like offensive caricatures. It’s such a shame as Lorac is a wonderful writer and seems to be reduced to poor narrators rather than fine actors. So disappointing.

Wonderful ECR Lorac but Poor Narrator
