About this listen

When famed psychic Alicia Lysander is brutally attacked after leaving a seance at the home of an earl, Jason Redmond and Daniel Haze must retrace her movements to determine who might have had a motive to want Alicia dead. As they delve into the private life of the woman who had not only become a friend but had also helped Daniel to rescue his abducted daughter, they uncover buried secrets, bitter rivalries, and unexpected betrayals.

Can Jason and Daniel isolate the motive and apprehend the killer in an investigation that has become unexpectedly personal?

Generally an easy listen - doesn’t require much in terms of cognitive power. Jason is portrayed as always correct with the most tolerant views in contrasts to Daniel who only seems to succeed due to Jason’s insights! As noted by another reviewer Daniel’s character has become rather stagnant and only serves to allow Jason to shine.
Both characters are rather over written and can be annoying.
Some of the historical references are interesting. However, there is a presentation in the narrative that everything from the USA is advanced and that Jason is bringing his medical exoerience and skills to the uneducated in England. It should be pointed that many of the references to medical advancement of this time came out of Scotland - Sir James Young Simpson introduced chloroform for surgical pain relief and Lord Joseph Lister pioneered the use of carbolic acid to prevent surgical infections, dramatically improving surgical outcomes and mortality rates. Other significant advancements included Alexander Wood's development of the hypodermic syringe, John Macintyre establishing the world's first hospital X-ray department, and the foundational work of Scottish scientists in understanding infectious diseases like malaria and brucellosis.

This was my least favorite book in the series because I really didn’t think that it was necessary to kill Alicia, I believed the author could have had another psychic involved in the story and have Alicia help Jason and Daniel solve the case, as she did in previous books.

I’m fond of recurring characters and I’m disappointed in this plot; also, I wasn’t too impressed with the storyline and the solution was rather obvious… except for detective Daniel because, as always it is Jason who solves the mystery (not really a spoiler here!)
At times the detective is really too stubborn, narrow minded and conservative, I start to truly dislike him.

The book is still read by the voce actress that sounds like a gentle auntie, she has a pleasant voice but nothing can change my opinion: these books, from the very first one, should have been read by a man!

A little disappointing for me

Another great story, thoroughly enjoyed. Well worth every minute.
Ready for another one please!!
Great story and great narration.
I know there’s been a change in narrator within the series but the listener should persevere, it is worth it.
I’m always at a loss when these books are finished.
I’ve listened to this one in a day. Whilst gardening and doing housework.
Just brilliant!!
