Summary

My stepbrother’s estate is fading fast. My resistance to him is fading faster.

When my marriage hits rock bottom, I escape to South Carolina to help my charming disaster of a stepbrother, Charlie—aka "the douchiest man in Manhattan"—fix up the decaying Southern mansion he's just inherited.

But the house has other ideas. Doors slam, voices whisper, and something—or someone—wants us to be more than reluctant roommates. An old journal confirms it: Charlie and I seem to be mirroring every step of a love story that took place a century ago.

A doomed one.

With every soft moment and stolen glance, it gets harder to imagine ending up with anyone else. But all I’ve ever wanted is a family, and that won’t be happening with a man who once said he’d rather be murdered than father a child.

Our story was written long before we came to this house. But do we still have time to rewrite the way it ends?

Oh My Heart !!..This story got me right in the heart....I just knew it would make me cry and it did countless times.
Maren and Charlie's story is considered forbidden as they are step siblings, but they aren't blood.
Maren is married to Harvey a very selfish horrible man,and she is longing for a family she wants to be a mother.
Charlie is in a bad place in his life drinking and women ruining his life,so Maren is sent to do a welfare check on him because she is the only person he would listen to.
Charlie's Mother has passed away and has left him a property and she would like him to renovate it and restore it to what it should be.
Maren finds herself wanting to go with him to check the house out and as soon as she sees the house she falls in love with the house, she feels drawn to it.
But Charlie wants to tear it down it is a money pit,but Maren wants to save it so Maren has to convince Charlie that it is worth saving....and when she does convince him this is when the adventure begins.
They decide to stay there and renovate the property....The house is speaking to Maren and it makes her re-think her life..The ghost of the past help her realise she is worth more than what Harvey is giving her.Maren discovers a book,a diary which tells the story of Margaret and Williams heartbreaking story...OMG their romance really got to me and I sobbed because of the trgedy and sadness of loving someone during a war and losing them.
Maren and Charlie are so attracted to eachother and the sexual tension is so charged between them..But they want different things in life..Maren longs for a child,Charlie does not want any children after seeing his mother go through the grief of losing his sister,he does not want the heartache.
I was so frustrated at times because why can't they be together, this is a slow burn romance and I found it really emotional and sad...I just wanted them to be together but there are always obstacles for them.
When they do give into their chemistry they are passionate and beautiful and it so bittersweet,I felt my heart ache.
The audiobook is perfectly narrated by two Amazing voice actors Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor who give Charlie and Maren life, with so much emotion you cannot help but feel all the feelings yourself.
I was so mesmorized by this story I loved listening to it and loved Jason and Samantha telling it to me,they were so AMAZING I cannot find any fault in their performances.
My Favorite Lost Cause by Elizabeth O Roark is like a tornado it sweeps you up within its chaos spinning you around, wrapping you up in the romance, emotion and passion then spitting you out and you're left feeling completely stunned at what you have just been through.

This is the second book in The Favorites series, and it's a fantastic addition to the series. I love this series! The romance between Maren and Charlie is original, well-written, emotional, and intriguing. Maren is beautiful, radiant, supportive, and strong, while Charlie is enigmatic, handsome, and sweet. They are step-siblings, and they are both fascinating characters. The story takes a different direction from the first book, and I loved it just as much. I really enjoyed the slow burn, the tension, the humor, the intrigue, and especially the ghost elements! The supporting characters are also great. It's a beautifully written slow-burn romance. Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke did an excellent job bringing these characters, and their story to life. They are a fantastic author/narrators team. I loved it!

Beautiful Story! ♥️

There were times that I really disliked Maren during the first book, which is Kit & Miller's story (and is wonderful), but I have loved listening to her & Charlie find their own happiness during this book.
This was an absolute joy to listen to. Wonderful writing and amazing narration from two excellent narrators. It being Duet Narration was just the icing on the cake! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I loved Charlie & Maren's story so much ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sweet slow, slow burn. Charlie and Maren have been fighting their attraction since they met many years ago despite not realising that everyone could see how much they meant to each other. Charlie was never the poster boy for good choices and Maren always felt second best to everyone… money doesn’t buy you happiness and they both had plenty of it.
Renovating a dilapidated mansion brought them closer as friends but also showed them how good they could be together by stepping out of their comfort zone.
Despite their relationship being taboo, the story never really revolved around that but on Maren being married and of course, her infertility. The history enthusiast in me also loves the WWI USA memories that were included in the book.
Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor’s narration of Charlie and Maren was superb.

Elizabeth O’Roark blows me away with another fabulous novel, a heartwarming romance novel that captivates your attention the entire time. This second book in her “Favorites” series is Charlie and Maren’s story, and their story stands on its own, characters from the first book make appearances, but everything you need to know is in the details. BTW, the first book, “My Favorite Bad Decision,” is just as amazing as this, and I recommend them both. Maren always wanted children but has had no luck with getting pregnant, and the stress of that is finally getting to her, as well as her husband’s dictating and demanding ways, and she is seeing him in a different light. She soon realizes that she married for the wrong reason and that their marriage was doomed from the start. When her family sends her to check on her stepbrother, Charlie, she does not like what she finds, him lost in his player ways and not dealing well with the loss of his mom. When she learns what his mother left him, a mansion in South Carolina, she convinces him to fix it up and volunteers to go with him and help. The place was in worse shape than they thought, and haunted, but that did not stop Maren from investigating what or who was calling to her. Maren and Charlie may have been step siblings, but there was an undeniable chemistry between them, one that was far from familial, and one that they did not want to give in to. The more time they spent together, the more drawn they were to each other, until they could not deny each other any longer. It was great watching these two first fight their feelings and then give in to them. Both want different things, so could a relationship really work, and what would their family think? I loved all the layers of this story and how it all played out, with the perfect balance of drama, angst, charming and heartwarming moments, heartfelt emotions and a slow burn, but so worth the wait romance. Also loved the storyline of the history and mystery of the old house, and the parallels to their lives. As always, the writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. Elizabeth O’Roark, thank you for another wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke are amazing at what they do, and adding the words of Elizabeth O’Roark into the mix, you know you are in for a treat of a listen. With voices that were fitting, they delivered a perfect portrayal of each character, embodying each of their personalities, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. Brentmoor was a natural in Maren’s role, just as Clarke was in Charlie’s role, conveying all their characters’ emotions palpably. They are entertaining storytellers, and their captivating performance rivets you to the story.
