About this listen

THE definitive practical and emotional survival guide to narcissistic separations and divorce, from medical doctor and Amazon bestselling author, Supriya McKenna. In the first book of her 'Narcissists in Divorce' series, Dr Supriya, one of the most well known names in the area of narcissistic relationships, offers up her years of experience working in this field.

In 'From Love-Locked to Leaving' Dr Supriya will first walk you through how to assess whether your partner is a true narcissist. Through a cast of compelling characters, who bring the different outward presentations of narcissism to life, together with in-depth questionnaires, you'll learn exactly how to deconstruct narcissistic behaviours. You'll discover the predictable divorce and separation behaviours to expect from a narcissist, and their impact on you and your children.

Dr Supriya will also help you to understand the psychological reasons why these relationships are so difficult to break free from, why you are likely to be confused or struggling, and what may have predisposed you to being targeted by a narcissist. With practical and compassionate guidance to help you decide whether (or when) to leave your relationship, you'll also learn essential strategies to build your resilience which will help you regardless of whether you choose to ultimately stay or leave.

If you do choose to separate, 'Narcissists in Divorce: From Leaving to Liberty' is the follow-on guide in the series. Dr Supriya, a former family doctor, works with clients and their lawyers to circumnavigate the pitfalls and difficulties specific to narcissistic divorces. She also teaches family justice professionals, at all levels, how to manage these challenging cases. Dr Supriya has written various books and articles on the subject of NPD, including the only book about narcissism specifically for family lawyers, and her podcast, 'Narcissists in Divorce: The Narcissist Trap' ranks in the world's top 5% most downloaded podcasts.

This book is an incredible insight into narcissism.

Narcissim has become such a buzzword with so much content and misinformation out there, but this book cuts through all that. Dr Surpiya clearly explains what narcissistic personality disorder is, the behaviours and how to recognise them, dispelling multiple myths along the way. The deep dive in Chapter 3 is particularly useful.

In my work as a coach, many clients ask about narcissism, often believing their partner is one (and in some cases, sadly they are) and I always refer them to this book and the narcissist tests, which are so useful to help people have clarity about their partner’s behaviour.

The book also explores how the narcissist’s behaviour can play out in divorce and the impact on children, before closing with a wonderful chapter on becoming stronger where Dr Supriya shares advice on how to heal and grow, giving survivors of abuse reassurance that they can, and will recover.

It really is a must-read for anyone dealing with or recovering from narcissistic abuse, not just from their partner, but in all relationships. I definitely recognised a few old bosses in her characters.

An incredible insight into narcissism.

Dr. Supriya McKenna understands narcissistic behaviour and abuse in a way that is very relatable. Using everyday language free of jargon she aptly describes what to watch out for with different types of narcissists during divorce. I would recommend this book to all those interested in knowing more, preparing themselves as much as they are able and wanting to understand thier circumstances more.

I've consumed several books on narcissism and consumed countless hours of YouTube and podcasts. This book is outstanding, it explains narcissism in simple practical ways through example and application. It gets to the core of how narcissism and gaslighting actually manifest in day to day interactions. There are no abstract concepts here, instead there is relatable and utterly priceless essential information. This book is excellent, the best I've consumed on the subject. From a red haired Irish non narcissist (-_^)

I read Dr. Supriya's new book "Narcissists in Divorce: From Love-Locked to Leaving" and I found it incredibly validating and helpful. I have been helping narcissistic abuse survivors for a few years now and have done a copious amount of reading and learning myself. I still found Dr. Supriya's book informative and easy to read. It's very well laid out considering all the aspects of what it's like to be in a narcissistic relationship to leaving and parenting with one. As a survivor, I found Dr. Supriya's advice and guidance on healing very helpful. I particularly admire her mentioning holistic tools such as EFT. Much literature would narrow healing to psychotherapy and I don't think it's fair or provide readers with a wider view of different ways to heal. But, Dr. Supriya has talked about different avenues. I thank Dr. Supriya for her work. Keep it up.

Dr McKenna’s audiobook explains narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), and how to recognise this, very well. She makes clear how underlying low self-esteem drives outward narcissistic behaviour. She reveals how narcissists’ unpredictable cycles of love-bombing and devaluation lead to addiction in their partners, and this addiction, makes them harder to leave. She tells how narcissists often use gas-lighting to cause partners to doubt their reality, leading to greater dependence on the narcissists, again making them harder to leave.

Dr McKenna describes how those who’ve previously been in an abusive relationship (e.g. had an abusive parent in childhood), may unconsciously be attracted to others who behave similarly, and are also likely to be abusive. Her encouragement to have self-compassion throughout is very important and useful. Her questionnaires to aid recognition of NPD are great.

Characters with NPD are described at various stages in their lives and the description of their behaviours and backgrounds helpfully, and very entertainingly, increases understanding of NPD. Dr McKenna does the voices of these characters brilliantly.

Dr McKenna explains the impact of narcissists’ behaviour on not just their partners but their children and others too. She helps you consider when might be a good time to leave, if you want to. Later in the audiobook she talks of many practical things you can do to help increase resilience, and appropriate sources of help for difficulties (ex)partners of narcissists are likely to have. I found her description of a gratitude journal particularly useful.

This is an excellent book, and Dr McKenna’s reading of it is very engaging. I strongly recommend it.
