About this listen

From the number one Kindle best-selling author of Call Me Mummy

Who will survive the night?

A nightmare jolts Debs awake. She leaves the kids tucked up in their beds and goes downstairs. There's a man in her kitchen, holding a knife. But it's not an intruder. This is her husband, Marc, the father of her children. A man she no longer recognises.

Once their differences were what drew them together, what turned them on. Him, the ex-army officer from a good family. Her, the fitness instructor who grew up over a pub. But now these differences grate to the point of drawing blood. Marc screams in his sleep. And Debs hardly knows the person she's become, or why she lets him hurt her.

Neither of them is completely innocent. Neither is totally guilty. Marc is taller, stronger and more vicious, haunted by a war he can't forget. But he has no idea what Debs is capable of when her children's lives are at stake....

A powerful exploration of a relationship built on passion, poisoned by secrets and violence. Perfect for listeners of Blood Orange and Big Little Lies.

Had previously read this book but chose to listen to audiobook version to re-enjoy. Think the audiobook gave added tension and claustrophobia to the story as you really felt like you were in their heads. Great characters and plot and great performance by narrator. Looking forward to getting audiobook of author's next book on credit day.

Fantastically Dark and Tense

I lost the plot of the story a few times as I kept zoning out. I was waiting for the story to properly start but it never did. Boring and drawn out

The story did not seem to get started and went nowhere

Starts 24th of December. Present with razor blades, bloodied hands. Nightmares. Eerie… knife.. 10 years ago, time goes back, to different time lines in the past giving the listener a deeper insight into the life of Debs and Mark. Family, work life - personal life. The children Dolly and PatPat. It’s a hard read at times, different degrees on domestic violence/coercive control and the impact of this as time goes on. Dark thoughts.

The audio really allows you to visualise and feel everything, the anxiety oozes out allowing the listener to really connect to Debs. Infidelity. Drug misuse. Empty promises and so much more. It was good to get flashbacks to before Debs and Mark too, getting an insight into Deb’s mother’s horrendous relationships and Marks upbringing with his mother and father. It’s difficult when you hear the dog get hurt through certain scenes. There’s a lot of emotions with this book and a lot of lessons to be learned too. ‘Two broken humans’. Definitely worth a listen to, really enjoyed it as an audio. Sorry is never enough.

A great listen

The dark, disturbing realism and brutal descriptions, make this a very different story and refreshing for that. I don’t feel refreshed having finished it, rather challenged, disturbed and gripped. I shall read something fluffy next as a literary sorbet, this fierce novel was the rich, main course. I shall be ready for the next book after that.

Gripping
