Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The groundbreaking new book showing how nature enhances our powers of attention and shapes brain development, from the founder of the field of environmental neuroscience.

What if we could harness the power of nature to become calmer, more focused and less distracted?

With so many things vying for our attention in modern life, we’re suffering a global epidemic of distraction, leaving us feeling drained, depleted and isolated. Renowned professor of psychology Dr Marc Berman offers a groundbreaking solution through environmental neuroscience and the art of attention restoration.

In Nature and the Mind, Dr Berman identifies the essential elements of a 'nature prescription' that can improve out cognitive performance and mental resilience, sharing life-altering findings such as:
• Having just eleven more trees on your street is related to decreases in cardio-metabolic disorders like stroke, diabetes and heart disease.
• Short walks in nature can improve attention by almost 20 percent and decrease depression symptoms.
• More green space around schools and homes is related to better school performance, reduced crime and improved working memory.

Featuring clear, practical solutions that you can apply to your daily life, no matter where you live, Nature and the Mind reveals how nature is the key to boosting your energy, restoring attention, changing your mood, and improving your mental and physical health.

An eye-opening book about how green and blue spaces can transform our thoughts and our lives. Marc Berman is a pioneering environmental neuroscientist, and he makes a compelling case that nature plays a vital role in our mental, social and physical health.
Marc Berman is a brilliant academic star of the new nature movement and his pioneering new book, ’Nature and the Mind,’ is sure to become a seminal force in the burgeoning new field of environmental neuroscience.
A singularly significant book... It’s brilliant and persuasive.
Marc Berman is the undeniable leader in the emerging field of environmental neuroscience. The studies described in this captivating book demonstrate beyond question that we are all a part of nature rather than apart from it.

The research presented is very interesting and well done, though not nearly as revolutionary and impactful as the author constantly emphasises. And this is the problem: The author. His constant self-importance, self-congratulatory overstatement of the state of research is grinding. Combine that with his constant self-references to his life - I did not buy this book to get the mundane biography of some dude called Marc and his nana Ruth - and repetition of the same message over and over again, including political commentary on demographic state of affairs in the US with no relevance to the psychology and neuroscience of nature interaction, and this book was a huge disappointment for my. I am really interested in this field and I had to suffer hours of this author’s vanity to get it. I also note that effect sizes of the different studies included are conveniently left out. Shame - this could have been a good book.
Performance by the narrator was fine.

Great research presented horribly
