Summary

For 18 years, Jude Farraday has put her children’s needs above her own, and it shows - her twins, Mia and Zach, are bright and happy teenagers. When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close-knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude. Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia’s best friend. Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable.

Jude does everything to keep her kids on track for college and out of harm’s way. It has always been easy - until senior year of high school. Suddenly she is at a loss. Nothing feels safe anymore; every time Mia and Zach leave the house, she worries about them. On a hot summer’s night her worst fears are realized. One decision will change the course of their lives. In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget... or the courage to forgive.Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.

How far would you go to protect one of your children?

This is the question in this heartbreaking book.

Jude has it all, a perfect family, a perfect house, a perfect life.
Her kids are popular at school (well one of them, the other pretends she is) and everything is rosy.

Jude is the perfect mother to twins Zach and Mia and they love her for it, everything she does is for them.

Mia is unhappy though, she doesn't fit in at school and has no friends, that is until one day, a girl called Lexi sits next to her and begins to talk to her, they then become inseparable best friends.
This concerns Jude as Lexi comes from the wrong side of the tracks, but gives Lexi the benefit of the doubt and soon she becomes an addition to their perfect family.

After a stupid mistake is made one night the family's life is never the same again and Lexi is pushed out of the families embrace.

I loved this story and was moved to tears on many occasions, it has friendship, love, loss and fear in bucket loads.

A definite recommendation from me!

I really enjoyed the book, it was a bit long winded but I was doing a work marathon at my bench and it kept me working for pretty much the whole book in one so perfect!
The narrator was great, it would make a good film.

Stick with it, it’s worth it, I really enjoyed it

Kristin hannah knows how to weave a good story. I found myself sobbing at the end.

Tugs at the heartstrings again.

It was a a bit slushy for my taste. As someone else said more for a young adult audience. Mia’s voice was extremely annoying. I did like Lexie as a character.

Just ok

The narrator was fantastic. Her ability to switch and change between the characters and their moods was superb.

However for me, this was not the usual outstanding writing that has made Kristin Hannah a favourite writer of mine. This book was rather meandering and predictable. That said, it was still an enjoyable and interesting read- just not outstanding like The Great Alone or the Nightingale.
It centres on grief and the various experiences of such- from denial to anger to forgiveness and acceptance. However the first part of the book sets the context for the eventual events that lead to the exploration of grief- and it is the exploration that for me, just didn’t ring true and felt rather lacking something- and did for not really work for me.

Not a usual Kristin Hannah in my opinion
