About this listen

For over 30 years, in his position as President and Chief Investigator of the Ghost Club of Great Britain, Peter Underwood was actively involved in undertaking night vigils and carrying out research into ghosts and paranormal activity in controlled, scientific conditions. This volume presents accounts of nights spent in haunted houses - and the folklore and violent past associated with them.

Findings include the headless Blue Lady, the disturbing inexplicable odour of lavender of Bovey House in Devon; the happy spirits monk of Bromfield Manor, Shropshire, who chuckles with delight when noticed; and the strange disembodied voices, footsteps and unnatural coldness of Newark Park, Gloucestershire.

Book of fairy tales. Narration terrible. Rubbish. Expected some impartial view. As for the bit on Borley , factually wrong. Woo we heard a noise. woo candle went out, woo door opened - must be a ghost 👻👻👻. Rubbish

Another point in the 1990s, I led a team that investigated Chingle Hall a dozen times. I met several times the people mentioned in the chapter. (Surprised not to get a mention actually) , I can say for definate, i never experienced anything that could not be explained. Also a large part of the property was 'private'. No entry. Pranksters ????

Interesting book, but just unproven stories.

Just stories

I'm about a quarter of the way through this and I'm enjoying the stories. It gives you a good background to the places and paranormal stories associated with them before it goes on to narrate the investigations with clear-sightedness and no sensationalism at all.

Unfortunately the narrator lets this down. Firstly, they haven't got the most listenable of voices. They certainly don't sound like a professional narrator/voice actor. Secondly, they frequently mispronounce words which is incredibly grating. The worst I've heard so far (out of many, many examples) is the fact that they mispronounce the word 'apparition' in a book about ghosts!!! What makes it worse is that sometimes she pronounces it correctly! I do wonder whether she listened back to it after she had recorded it.

However, I would still recommend this for anyone interested in Peter Underwood and the more serious, skeptical paranormal investigators that existed before Most Haunted and it's host of professional and amature imitators came along and turned the subject into an absolute joke. The accounts themselves are well worth it.

Great content somewhat let down by the delivery

Enjoyable, cosy and informative book by the doyen of ghost hunters but the narrator veered between monotonous, laughably amateurish, semi-illiterate and if aloud would have been embarrassing. I can't believe this is being portrayed as a professional production. At points she sounds out words and names akin to a child learning to read. At other points she mispronounced words entirely adding letters as non-existant as some of the spooks. The high point was surely how she enunciates 'Langenhoe' three different ways within one chapter. Unbelievable.

My 4 year old niece would be a better narrator
