Summary

There's a mantra real writers know but wannabe writers don’t. And the secret phrase is this: "Nobody wants to read your shit." Recognizing this painful truth is the first step in the writer's transformation from amateur to professional.

“When you understand that nobody wants to read your shit, you develop empathy. You acquire the skill that is indispensable to all artists and entrepreneurs - the ability to switch back and forth in your imagination from your own point of view as writer/painter/seller to the point of view of your reader/gallery-goer/customer. You learn to ask yourself with every sentence and every phrase: Is this interesting? Is it fun or challenging or inventive? Am I giving the reader enough? Is she bored? Is she following where I want to lead her?"

I don’t know why I resisted reading this...perhaps I thought it would be this same regurgitated writing advice that chokes the interwebs. But after hearing it recommended by several of my marketing heroes, I bit el bulleto. So glad I did. This is a refreshing masterclass in writing with endless food for thought and practical steps. In love.

Sharp, succinct, shockingly useful.

Although it follows a great deal of Pressfield's life, in essence, the title says it all!...

The lesson?

Brilliantly written, constructed and executed. Great, real world narration. It feels like you’re sitting across from SP having a beer and listening to him tell tales. Loved it. Thanks Steven, thanks Shawn.

Profound, grounded, inspirational.

Having worked my way through a huge selection of books on writing, the good, the bad and the unexceptional, I came to this with my usual skepticism but was absolutely blown away. This short, concise and brilliantly observed book sets it apart from nearly every other. Beautifully narrated by the author whose candour and wit makes it an easy read, it lays to rest some myths and reveals some home truths and the wisdom I have picked up has been invaluable. I have listened to many books on this platform yet this is the first I have been compelled to review. An absolute game changer. Just get it, you won't be sorry.
