About this listen

The crew of an oceanic research vessel goes missing in the Pacific along with their mini submarine.

An evangelical media star holds a rally next door to a cinematic convention in LA. The cops know there's going to be trouble, but what they didn't foresee was the presence of a Glaswegian photographer with an indecipherable accent and a strong dislike of hypocrisy or of a terrorist who seems to have access to plutonium as well as Semtex.

Having listened all Chris Brookmyer's recent offerings I was excited when more of his earlier books were released on audio this book certainly didn't disappoint. A great mix of suspense and dark humour, the story underlined by his distaste for the hipocracy of organised faith and those who abuse it's power for their own ends. Well written and well read. A fast paced and very enjoyable listen.

A brilliant Brookmyer book

insightful look at the rational of extremists who use religion as their calling card and who can't love a Motherwellian take on LA.

Like other reviewers I thought the Scottish accent was very odd and took a lot of getting used to. I will normally quite happily revisit audiobooks I've listened to before (saves me money!) but the odd accent makes this an audiobook I'm unlikely to revisit despite enjoying the story.
The story itself is irreverent and funny with intrigue aplenty.

The story is fabulous, and the narrator was generally really good, but an American trying to do Scots? Too hard I think.

Great story, and I know a Scots accent is hard to do...

I agree with the other reviewers that the Scottish accent was bizarre and I nearly stopped listening but glad I didn't. When I had got used to the main character's accent it became quite endearing and I'm glad I listened to the whole thing. I'm a great fan of Christophers Brookmyre's books and the Angus King read ones are fantastic but still glad I persevered with this one.

Great story despite poor Scottish accent
