About this listen
The dragon chose her. The rider would claim her. The fae would use her. To fight for herself, she may have to watch the world burn.
Sole survivor of a magical catastrophe that fractured the Barrier and killed the men she loved, Annika swore never to take another bond. To stay hidden from those who crave her power, she fakes her death and vanishes into obscurity.
But her magic is restless. A dragon haunts her dreams, and monsters are slipping through the cracks in the Barrier her magic created.
When a brutal attack forces her hand, Annika reveals the truth she's fought to bury—drawing the attention of the ruthless Commander of the Dragon Riders and his dark fae Necromancer.
Both are men of war, forged in blood and duty. Their touch may be gentle, their eyes kind, but to them, she is a weapon—the first woman ever chosen by a dragon, whose magic cannot be contained by one bond alone.
Torn between the Commander, who ignites her power, and the Necromancer, who tempers its inferno, Annika must decide if her heart can bear another bond...
If she denies it, the Barrier will fall, and the kingdom she swore to protect will burn to ash.
A multi-POV slow-burn romantic epic fantasy with a dark Slavic twist, unique magic, dragons, forced proximity, and enchanting world-building. Perfect for fans of The Bridge Kingdom, Blood and Steel, and The Witcher.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
From the very first chapter, Ani’s voice – brought to life so vividly by Olivia Wright – wraps around you like a spell. Her strength, her sharp tongue, that fragile edge beneath it all… it’s something to be felt. Every flicker of grief, every spark of defiance, lands deeper when it’s spoken aloud.
And then there’s Vincent Skye. The dual narration adds such a rich, immersive depth to Orm and Ari – Orm’s steady, commanding presence, Ari’s dark, teasing mischief – crackles. The chemistry between them and Ani is even more electric in audio. The banter that I adored in the written version becomes something else entirely; sharper, funnier, and more intimate. Vahin’s presence, especially, is an absolute highlight. The humour hits perfectly (yes, I still laughed out loud), and those moments of inappropriate dragon eavesdropping are somehow even better when performed.
What struck me most, though, is how the narration elevates the emotional core of the story. The grief. The trauma. The quiet, aching loneliness Ani carries. There’s a rawness in the delivery that makes it feel almost too personal at times – like you’re intruding on something fragile and real, it lingers in your chest.
The world-building – already so rich on the page – becomes utterly immersive in audio. The tension hums beneath every scene, the monsters feel closer, more visceral, and that ever-present unease creeps. Wright and Skye don’t just tell the story, they build it around you. It’s the kind of performance that makes you forget you’re listening at all.
Verdict: Utterly immersive and emotionally devastating. I flew through this audiobook almost as quickly as I devoured the book itself – completely absorbed, completely transported. I’ll definitely experiencing each Olena Nikitin book in audio as it's an experience not to be missed.
