Summary

Born in fire. Tempered in blood.

Epheria is a land divided by war and mistrust. The High Lords of the South squabble and fight, only kept in check by the Dragonguard, traitors of a time long past, who serve the empire of the North.

In the remote villages of Southern Epheria, still reeling from the tragic loss of his brother, Calen Bryer prepares for The Proving - a test of courage and skill that not all survive. But when three strangers arrive in the village of Milltown, with a secret they are willing to die for, Calen’s world is ripped from under him and he is thrust headfirst into a war that has been raging for centuries.

There is no prophecy. His coming was not foretold. He bleeds like any man, and bleed he will.

Includes bonus story The Fall.

Good narration, fairly average, by-the-numbers fantasy plot.
The Main characters are described laughing and smiling far too much. It’s a bit amateurish writing in that respect and in a few other places as well. It also makes the main characters feel quite unbelievable as they apparently grin and smirk their way through what, at times, are truly horrific events. Other characters are generally done better though and in truth are a lot more interesting than the main characters. Perhaps this is intentional in an attempt to not put readers off a more polarising set of main characters? It still seems like a miss-step to me, and a missed opportunity for better storytelling.
It’s a fairly easy read though. The narration is good, and I think it sets up the start of the series quite well, with some interesting story threads to build on.
However, given the first impression I have from this book, I’m not yet sure if I’ll read the second book in the series, despite having heard it is better.

Slightly below average reading of a poorly written book. The characters and plot are uninspired and the reader is forced to endure scene after scene of mundane descriptions and stiff dialogue.

Boring

not the greatest story. enjoyable. seems like it's clearly written with the intent to be a netflix script. Nice light read. the trouble is that there is absolutely nothing original in it.

the ending resonates with the phantom menace ( star wars)
