I read all the (released) Hazard and Somerset books a while ago now and I absolutely adored them. I was delighted to revisit their relationship with these short stories and vignettes. I am definitely the target audience as I could happily listen to stories about them doing the laundry, DIY or cooking dinner - these stories weren't that humdrum though, they were little glimpses into their everyday life - although they still manage to get into trouble. There's a lot of warmth, humour and love in their relationship and I just adore them.

The narrator does a really good job of depicting their separate personalities - particularly Emery's gruffness (I love him so much). I can't wait for the next installment.

It was lovely to catch up with the guys!

Although there are several stories in this collection, I want to focus on two. When the Road Rises Up was certainly interesting. The men feel they need a break and so go away to spend time together without ex-wives, daughters, and parents. Pretty simple, right? Except the first night, Hazard hears a baby crying at the hotel. The problem? He hasn’t seen a baby amidst all the other guests.

Okay, so that’s the first thing. He also discovers this used to be a boarding school and that things weren’t as they seem. Then there’s a murder! So much for a quiet vacation. Of course, the men solve the mystery and yay to the older folks who jump in to help. Quite a ride (literally).

The other story I really enjoyed was Little Stoics. Now, I’ve done some skimming of Stoicism as a way of life and much of it appeals to me. Hearing there’s an entire children’s series about that way of approaching life had my curiosity piqued. But then things go off the rails and while Hazard is in physical therapy (and, of course, trying to escape), Somers has a new mystery to solve. Things don’t go exactly as planned, and yet somehow Hazard accepts reality when his partner shows up battered. Just the level of violence I expect with these two. Cute story – especially the ending when each discovers the other’s plan.

I enjoyed all the stories very much and hope there’s a volume 2 coming soon. Even if not, I suspect I haven’t seen the end of these two.

Finally, I adore Tristan James as a narrator and especially love his work with these two. Definitely recommend.
