About this listen

Olivia Colman reads an abridged version E. Nesbit's classic novel. The Railway Children is a masterpiece of children's fiction. It wonderfully evokes a bygone age and is packed with fun, excitement and adventure.

When their father goes away unexpectedly, Roberta (Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis have to move from London to a cottage in the countryside. At the local station they make friends with the porter, Perks, and spend their time waving to the passengers on the trains. But although they have many adventures, one question still remains: is their father ever coming back?

The story of the children's attempt to avert disaster on the line, the mystery surrounding their father and Bobbie's resourcefulness has been cherished by generations.

Please note: this is an abridged version of The Railway Children.

I still enjoy children's stories. Although the language is rather dated, especially in the children's dialogue this is such a lovely story with a very uplifting ending. Quite cheered me up.

Rather dated but still lovely.

I don't usually bother with abridged versions of books. However, this was a must try thanks to a combination of the price (free) and Olivia Colman reading a childhood favourite. It did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just wishe she had read the unabridged version. She has the perfect reading style for this type of book.

Delightful but short
