Summary

Modern theology claimed that it ignited a renaissance in trinitarian theology. Really, it has been a renaissance in social trinitarianism. Classical commitments like divine simplicity have been jettisoned, the three persons have been redefined as three centers of consciousness and will, and modern agendas in politics, gender, and ecclesiology determine the terms of the discussion. Contemporary trinitarian theology has followed the spirit of this trajectory, rejecting doctrines like eternal generation which were once a hallmark of Nicene orthodoxy and reintroducing subordinationism into the Trinity.

Motivated by the longstanding need to retrieve the classical doctrine of the Trinity, theologian Matthew Barrett brings together Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox scholars to intervene in the conversation. With over forty contributions, this ecumenical volume resurrects the enduring legacy of Nicene orthodoxy, providing a theological introduction that listens with humility to the Great Tradition.

The distinct yet united voices of On Classical Trinitarianism summon the next generation to move past modern revisionism for the sake of renewing classical trinitarian theology today. Together, they demonstrate that Nicene orthodoxy can endure in the modern world and unite the church catholic.

A collection of essays designed to demonstrate that the simplicity in Christ that those damened 'biblicists' might desire is a redundancy in thought at odds with the 'good and necessary consequence' which creates a confusion and riot of thought that at the least furnishes material for endless Phd's; and making of many books all of which is justified because long ago some intellectuals of the day misread prophetic statements concerning the Messaih (as Peter observes the Prophets making them but dimly understood of what they were propehysying) and decided that Jesus the Man born of Mary as the special creation of God; the beginning of the creation of God (the Church which Christ would build) actually prexisted and therefore Scripture must 'by good and necessary consequence' be found to support a doctrine of the Trinity which being incomprehensible must finally be found a mystery which we worship in our ignorance but our very inability to understand becomes the measure of our faith and then allows 'evangelicals' to proclaim that Jesus IS God to the mockery of reason and common sense.
However, if you are a Trinity worshipping Christian whose gospel is God died for ME as the 'illiterates' would have it; then these essays both show why you should treat with disdain those who would think that the scripture is plain to state that John's gospel was written 'that you might believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the son of God' and that believing you might have life through his name or authority that authority through which we a'' becme 'sons of God' and not by the man but by God; then these are for you. With absolute confidence you can scorn those who might suggest that the entire Catholic & Orthodox Church is nothing but the ripping of the new wineskins by the introduction of the old and the Reformers were but tools for the power hungry Princes of their time to disentangle themselves from Rome's hold over the simple so that they might keep their revenues without revolution, alas of course all rebellion is 'as the sin of witrchcraft' and thus this unleashed forces of greed, covetousness, and self-righteousness which found perfect realisation in first Europe and Britain with their forms of national religious triumphalism and finally Russia and the USSR as Communist Orthodoxy (killing in the name of love) and America (bombing in the name of profit) teaching the truth it's better the devil you know.
In short a marvelous tour through the intellectual certainties of those who 'know' the true doctrine of the Trinity, and a rebuttal of all those who would use this human creation for their own distinctly human ends; be it a social trinitarianism which demands equality and thus overides distinction, or a strict heirarchy which insists so shut up woman and obey your husband.
