Summary

How far would you go for happily ever after?

'An unputdownable fairy tale' Kerri Maniscalco, New York Times bestselling author of Kingdom of the Wicked

From the #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of the Caraval series, the first book in a new series about love, curses, and the lengths that people will go to for happily ever after.

For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in happily ever after. Until she learns that the love of her life is about to marry another, and her dreams are shattered.

Desperate to stop the wedding, and heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic, but wicked, Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.

But after Evangeline's first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game - and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy . . .

Not my cup of tea. I believe the book is written for much younger audience, however, somehow also got hyped by more mature category of readers. Maybe the overall “Alice in wonderland”-kind of atmosphere put a spell on the readers and that alone could be enough, but unfortunately it did not have the same effect on me.
Here are some arguments for the 3 stars:
1. Extreeemely annoying and obnoxious FMC, that has 0 character progression until the end of the book. I was baffled by the choices she made and by the thickness of the plot convenience armour around this character. As for MMC, he often came off as unnecessarily rude for no reason.
2. Not even slightly memorable side characters, there was not a single one of them I liked enough to remember their names.
3. Rather random plot. I honestly thought of dnf-ing the book at some point because there was no logic to the sequences of the events.
4. Inconsistent magic system and world building. At first I was on board with the story, but halfway through the book… vampires?? Since then everything else also went sideways for me.

While I did not say positive things about the story itself, I would like to note decent work of the chosen narrator. If I had to read the physical book, I would have probably quit halfway (well, right after the vampires get involved).

Overly naive to the point of making dumb choices every time FMC and rather messy story

This novel is a chewy, bubblegum, fondant fantasy that has lit up my girlish heart. Thank you Stephanie for inviting me into this fun and extravagant world. It has really grown on me as I’ve gone through both novels and I now find myself counting down the days until the third novel is released. To anyone skeptic or unsure I encourage you to give it a good go and you might find yourself falling in love like I have.

Fondant Fantasy

My kind of book! Full of magic, hope, love, tricks and secrets. Evangeline and Jacks are perfect main characters. Looking forward to reading where their story goes in the next two books.

A perfect book for those who chase their happily ever after
